Calcium Reactor

Hello,

I'm using a Ca reactor with Ca media and Mg media.

My alk is 15dKH, but my calcium is 400ppm and magnesium is 1200ppm in the reactor effluent.

The pH inside the reactor is 6,8.

Anyone knows why my Ca and Mg are so low?

Hug

Well, the reactor media adds alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium to the water column at a fixed ratio, so it a couple of parameters are low, the reactor can't help. I'd back off on the reactor for a couple of days to get alkalinity down to 11 or so, and then use calcium chloride (like TurboCalcium) and a decent magnesium supplement to get those parameters in line. I use a DIY magnesium supplement, but Kent Tech-M, ESV, Salifert, and Warner supplements are fine, as well.

Hello bertoni,

the problem is that my Ca on the effluent of the Ca reactor is at 350ppm, mg = 1200 = Alk > 11. So them are not in the same radio in the effluent. I don't know why, perhaps my media is not dissolving! I don't know.

However, i'll do wha you said. Back off the reactor and get the parameters in line.

Hug

I run mine at a lower pH than you're using. The effluent pH is around 6.4. I never measure the Ca of the effluent, but my tank Ca levels are around 425 and the alk is around 10 dkH. I could run it at a higher drip rate to bump my alk, but this is my preferred level. I'd also expect the effluent alk would be much higher than 15...

The effluent parameters will be influenced by the input tank water, so I wouldn't worry about the ratio there all that much.

Agreed. I suffered from that when I first put my reactor on line. Get the numbers correct via dosing before putting the reactor online.
Also, have water tested with a different set of test kits to ensure accuracy.
