I used a Tunze Osmolator and IMHO it is one of the best on the market.

tunze osmolator = $$$
jbj ato = $$
DIY = $

like mr9iron stated, i think tuzne is the best. i went with the jbj since i was too lazy to make a DIY and didn't have the $$$ for the tunze.

I used the JBJ with the Aqualifter Pump. Just make sure the pump is not set too far below the tank.

The jbj is not always cheaper than the Tunze as it does not come with a pump. Depending on the pump you get the price difference can be pretty close.

How many inches is ideal? Why not too far?

What makes an ATO better than another?

Is JBJ better than Autotopoff.com?

In my opinion the best ATO is the most reliable one. I have not had problems with my JBJ. The most reliable method IMO is to get a programmable precise pump that you can set to pump a set amount of water into your tank as your evap is probably a consistent amount. I think one of the most reliable options is the LM3 with the topoff module.
