I'd Like to Avoid a Montipora War...
I've seen a few tanks recently where different color montipora capricornis had grown together to make a pretty impressive display. A great example is the August 2008 totm:
I'm going to do my best to replicate in my tank, but I'm curious whether the same effect can be accomplished with slightly different species of "capricornis" type monti's or if I need to be 100% sure that I get all the same species. I'd like to avoid an all out war if I at all possible. Any thoughts are appreciated... |

I got something happen with a pink/orange cap and the "idaho grape" (whatever it happens to be). There was no fighting, they simply scrolled around one another similar to the picture.

They will generally figure it out. They each want to survive more
than they want to fight. I have run into some issues with combos like Nodosa to Cap. But Caps, and Digitata's will grow into each other with little affect. I would suggest to let them grow into one another, rather than forcing the issue. This way they are'nt trying to acclimate/recover and being forced into a new neihbor all at once.

Frankenpora made a good point. Montis are growers not fighters. They survive by growing fast and choking out other corals on the reef. They are very passive and tend not to sting other corals. Heck, I'm not even sure if they can sting. Anyways, don't think too much about this, just throw some different montis together and go from there. It is good to know which ones will grow faster because you will want to put smaller pieces of those into the "collage" than the others, otherwise they will choke out the others and all you will have in the end is the faster growing monti. I would say any cap/whorling type could be mixed together and any encrusting type can be mixed together.
Here is an updated pic of the pic posted in this thread: In this picture, there are 3 different species of montipora growing together. The green I believe is a true capricornis. The grape I'm not sure of the species but it is not capricornis. And the orange I'm also not sure of the species but it is more of an encrusting monti than a whorling monti like capricornis.

^^^Great info!
Yeah, I'm not going to force it, but I will be putting them in proximity with one another and let the inevitable happen. After your post, I may just add a digi to the mix too! Well, maybe later...

I don't consider it a stolen idea by any means. I've seen people doing it for years. I've seen people do it with millis also but those are a little harder to find 2 that won't sting each other.
