Help!!! White Slimy Filamentous covering in tank
Posted this on RC last evening with one person responding. I need some other ideas if there are any.
Hello fellow TBRC members I am in need of some help. I have for some reason white slimy growth happening in my tank. I noticed it about a week and a half ago and it seems to be getting worse. It started off as white algae like growth on my inside glass. Instead of the green typical algae that I use to wipe off. At the time it didn't bother me but I was keeping an eye on it. So tonight as I was checking everything as usual and cleaning the glass off I looked at my one of my Koralia pumps and saw it was infested inside with this stuff. I turned it off and then on and a crap load of this stringy white whatever it is came flying out. I took it out and blew it out over the sink. I checked my parameters and all was within norm as it has been for the past several months. I check for Alk, dkh, nitrate, phos, PH, Calc, Salinity all but Nitrate (15-20ppm) are what they should be. That is what I'm testing for currently. Here is what has changed in the past 2 weeks. I purchased a RO/DI unit and water coming from it tests at 5 TDS. The RO water from the LFS I was getting it from tested at 58 TDS. I also cleaned my canister filter and had placed some Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge in a filter bag in it. Does anyone have a clue what this may be? I will post pics later tonight when it gets darker so I can take a better pic of it. Thanks for all who respond. Here is the link to the pics.... http://s679.photobucket.com/albums/vv156/Tipmoff/

Looks and sounds like a bacterial bloom, were you carbon dosing or adding in some zeovit type products?

I did something you probably shouldn't ever do to get rid of it. I jacked up the Ph to 8.8 in a very short time. It wiped it out though.

BTY... The tank is 7 months old and does have a cyano issue but not too bad. Was going to attack that but this problem arose.
Well I did start dosing Vodka at .01ml on Monday but it was starting before that. I am not going to turn the lights on today and see what the tank looks like when I get home. The first pic in the link from GrouperGenius looks like what I have. I don't have a sump or refugium with this setup. I have been dosing 2 part B-ionic for Calcium and PH buffer which I would guess is similar to the Kalkwasser. Hmmm.... I'll be crossing my fingers on this one.

Vodka can and will bloom the bacteria,it uses the vodka as a food.you state it was occuring before dosing nut the dosing will make It worse.stop vodka for a few days and of should go away on it's own if it is a bacterial bloom.

I'm not positive it is bacteria, but it looks and sounds like a bloom I had when I did vodka dosing.basicly the bacteria feed on the sugars in the vodka and multiply, too much food source(vodka)can cause the bacteria to explode and cause a white slimy film.

That is what it appears to be. I am going to try and raise my PH a little as suggested by GrouperGenius and see if that helps along with stopping the Vodka dosing. THe lights out today really didn't do anything as the sides of my glass were the same as if they were on so it's not photosynthetic in nature it appears.
I'll keep it updated is it progresses and thanks for your help all.
