reefllo snapper question

The snapper has a 2" outlet pulling from the sump. Are most of you drilling that size into your sump or reducing it to a smaller size?

I about to start plumbing but iam not sure what size glass bit to buy.

thanks

i use a reeflo dart and it has a 2in inlet and i only have a 1in bulkhead. so i most def. have a reduction on my pump. i dont think that it really slows it down. mine pumps like a mad machine. i know that its not the most effective way but i didnt have a bit, and i was replacing a blueline 70 which has a 1in inlet. oh well, what can you do.

I would not recommend using a smaller size than the inlet. Using a smaller inlet can cause cavitation in the housing, which could send air bubbles into your aquarium. But more importantly the air in the housing will damage the pump. I carry the Reeflo line and Reeflo advises against using a smaller pipe than the inlet on the pump. You can restrict the output of the pump without harm, but not the input.

I completely agree with MattShack.

You should plug the 1" fitting and drill for a 2". Any restriction on the input side is detrimental to the pump.

I use a Dart on my 180g. I kept the 2" suction side plumbing as well. Chris from Reeflo says you can downsize the suction side to 1.5" with no problem as long as the suction side is NOT smaller in diameter than the output. That is what can cause the cavitation of these pumps. Just keep the suction side equal to or greater than the output of the pump.

I'm using 2" in and out on my Blackfin, which is what it came with and it runs like a beast. A quiet beast though . I'll add my opinion to the pile and agree to not downsize the intake. Most pumps are designed to push and not pull so if nothing else you could wind up shortening the life of the pump by doing so.

The OP decided to go with the 2" intake, but just to make it unanimous, my $.02: WHAT THEY SAID WHAT THEY SAID ^^^^^
