Do many good reefkeepers keep sponges? I live in S. Florida and see some (I think) while out snorkeling. Are they similar keeping to any of the soft corals or anemones? I thought this was a dumb enough question such that I should ask it here in the Newbie area.

Hi Wish,
Depends on who you ask. I've tried sponges Halichondria sps. in a seahorse tank but did not have much success. As you probably know most cannot tolerate any exposure to air, even briefly. They are filter feeders and demand bacteria and phytoplankton to survive. Some have endosymbionts to help provide nutrition in the same fashion as corals. They need good flow and tank placement is critical. In general the colorful ones tend to lose that color over time and many tank critters will nip at them giving a rag-tag appearance over time. Some also release toxins that can kill nearby corals. I would suggest you avoid them unless your really know what your are doing.

People do keep them and not all are toxic. It is just somewhat chancy.

But they do retain their color no matter what you feed them.

Help! Trying to catch a lobstah!
Hi! I'm trying to catch our lobster as he's eating all the fish. Anyway, I set the trap this morning & every other fish & cleaner has eaten my bait...except for the dang lobster. I don't want to over feed the tank but how do I get the lobster trapped??!! I've never done this before so advice is welcomed & much appreciated!
Cheers! |

Drain the water down in your tank until you can catch the lobster. I would save the water into garbage pails and dump it right back in after you catch the lobster. or you can simply add boiling water back into the tank and invite PaulB over for dinner ![]() btw ![]() To Reef Central

Make a lobster trap, thats the way I catch them. Then I eat them, but you could eliminate that step

OK Cap' and Paul, I think the cold weather is slowing you two down some regarding your pokes at Tom. I happen to still enjoy the '70's clothing ...it was "Cool Man!"
As far as the sense of humor, well all 3 of you keep me smiling..."Far Out Man!" The other forums I frequent don't hold a candle to this one...you guys are not only entertaining, you're very knowledgable and most helpful. I couldn't nor wouldn't ask for more! East coast, West coast and Canada...you have it all covered! Anyway, the South is mostly only good for seafood...all that salty air has corroded most brains down there Oh yea, I happen to love seafood!!!!

various "REACTORS"
I've seen reefers talk about all the various "reactors" they use such as
Plankton Calcium Phosphorus or PhosBan Carbon?? Kalk?? Silicon removal? Ozone What are they all for and are any of them worth the money? Does it depend if your tank is SPS or LPS dominated? Is this the wrong thread for this? I am pretty newbie. ---Wishfish |

Wishfish: REACTORS
Lighting, Filtration and Other Equipment is a RC forum where you can find information about calcium reactors and such. If you have a specific reactor and question(s) in mind, you can surely ask it here and Waterkeeper, Cap, Tom or others may be able to answer or direct you to where to find the information. A simple Google search will often help as well as the various RC sponsors may carry the reactor (and description) you have questions about. Whether they are worth the money is a decision that only you can make.
RC is a great place to learn. Everyone has their own opinions and experiences. No 2 reefs are the same. I have not been in the hobby long and continue to read, read and read some more. This hobby tends to be a journey and one that shouldn't be rushed because if it is, you will have losses not only from your wallet but in the aquaria you keep. Welcome and happy reefing!

Thank you very much, Teri Ann. Ok, I will go to the lighting, filtration, and other equipment forums. It is all so confusing to me. I guess I never had enough chemistry to have it all make immediate sense. Thanks. ---Wishfish |
