Replacing MH bulbs

When it is time to replace my MH bulb (currently have a 250w XM 15k in a hanging pendant), I am thinking of switching to a XM 10k. Do I need to raise the light or shorten the time the light is on to acclimate the corals?

I replace mine once a year ... 250KW 10k

Is there any way to test if they actualy need to be replaced within 1 year or iff they are still good?
