how is the water on base?
I am at Kinser, just wondering how the water is onbase? My tank arrives on Wed and I need some live sand and going to make some water. I am thinking about going to the commissary and getting some RO water if they sell it there....but lugging 14 gallons back from the commissary with no car kinda sucks..lol.

Water on base
My friend tested the water from the base and it hase no clorine, I stil fill up a bucket and let it set for a couple of days before I add it to my aquarium. I had bought several large buckets from the concession mall they fishing buckets for about 8-9$ and I made several trips to the ocean to start my tank, I figured it is better for them. plus being so close I dont mind. And when I do a water change I use ocean water, I only use tap water to suppliment for evap. I pretty much get everything from the ocean live sand water and live rock, the rock has coriline algie already on it, just be carful of the Mantis shrimp, they can cause some havoc. If you need any help finding stuff lett me know Im here in Oki on foster I go out at any opportunity.

awesome, thank you, my tank gets here on Wed, and I will need some sand. I am hoping to take my license test this week as well, probably thursday. I have to go up to Hansen and get my buddy's van that he is letting me use. I will be working a swing shift, one weekend on, one weekend off. So I will have plenty of time to go out and collect things. Thanks for the info.

awesome, thank you for the info. Once I get my license I am sure I will be able to get around easier, instead of bumming rides all the time. I got my buddies van that he is letting me use for a few months.

is where many of us (including tylersdad) have gotten their RO systems. speaking of which, I think it's almost time for a filter change for me.

got an idea....we (at the mess hall) get food items in 5 gallon containers No need so spend any $. I am going to pick up 3 containers tomorrow and hopefully go get some water on Sunday, and fill my tank up. I am going to let it cycle with my LR in it, with the lights off for a while. Once the rocks start looking better I will add some live sand......

If you plan on going to ACO be forewarned they are oft times not in office consistently on Sundays as they maintain tanks for different stores. Also the Gates to the area they are in close at 1800 IIRC

Are the majority of you in the military? I take it that you are there on a long tour or else you wouldn't be putting that kind of money into your tanks.

yep, the minimum is two years, some longer... hell I came on an extended long and just IPCOT so I have plenty of time here.
plus its easy to pick up stuff being sold, and you can get alot of stuff cheap here compared to the states.

I hear that, I was in Germany for 6 years, on a long tour, (2 year unaccompanied) which ended up being 6 years. I too had the option to in place COT but the chances of it getting approved were pretty slim, so I had to come back to the states.
We (the Air Force) have 3 bases there in Japan (Misawa, Kadena, and Yokota) Are you guys near any of those bases? I was hoping to get to Japan before I retire. How's the culture? Sorry to hijack the thread. i was amazed to see an overseas reef club made up primarily of military.
