I'm Stumped & some need help!

I am having a problem with many acro tips burning and most montis having necrosis. My parameters are normal and are as follows when I tested 20 minutes ago.
SG- 1.024
TEMP- 78 F
PH - 8.23
ALK - 8 DKH
CA -440
MAG - 1380
All test kits have been tested for accuracy with testing solution.
I thought it may be a potassium over dose but I haven't added any for weeks.
I am stumped as to what the problem is. Any ideas what might be causing this issue?

Not that this is a concern, but I like to keep my salinity at 1.026(35PPT) I would see if you can have someone else test your alk for you too.

How is the

NO3 and PO4 of the tank?

I switched back to Reefers Best but I have my doubts that is the issue. The way the montis are looking if I didn't know better I'd think it was nudis.

I have sold a lot of frags lately that depleated the SW and I didn't compensate with extra salt when it was topped off. My SG is usually kept at 1.026 as well but I can't see that being this problem.

NO3 & PO4 are not tested in my system but I have never seen those have this kind of affect on the corals. This is something wierd & different.

maybe because you stopped using potassium, its a possibility, another is strontium, a friend of mine here on reefcentral went thru the same problem, his monites started getting necrosis, he asked several reefer friends and some told him to check his strontium, it was REALLY low, he lost all his montis because he caught the problem too late, i wish you good luck and hope they recover

I just thumbed through your build thread, ironically I notice you were adding the first test pieces a year ago almost to the day.

Looking at your results to date, I doubt its anything you are doing.....unless its something that has changed from your routine, or some mechanical problem.

A month.....perhaps ph with the shift in the seasons and C02. Have you looked at your daily fluctuations? Did you slack during the holidays.....perhaps go on autopilot a little?

Given your collection, do certain ones seem to be plaqued than others? You mention montis...what specifically in acros? Blue ones, smooth skinned, higher up/lower?

What about coloration? Lighter/more brown?

400g right? what about stability.....larger ones can be uber solid, and there are those who think that when they are ultra stable...they are more sensitive to changes we normally don't think would have adverse effects.......almost the opposite end of the spectrum to a small tank violently shifting....but with possibly the same result? (aka temperature change debate)

I had a patch of this for a while.....I stopped using carbon/GFO, didn't add a single additive except to keep the basic parameters up, went to fewer different types of food.....and did more regular/larger WC's....

.......could be a latent result from the overdose, but am just trying to throw things out there.....

Overtime it went away for me and the entire time I was looking for that dang rusty screw or razor blade.....but never found one. I noticed that the blue ones, torts, and a few other specific ones see to be hit the hardest.

In any case, I think you will come through it. Keep looking and vigilant......

Take some pictures and zoom around them on your computer, you may see something your overlooking.

Love your tank too! I'm having similar issues in my 175 out of nowhere! Is there something in the air?

I was not able to find any RBS locally so I had to go with reef crystals for a few months. I am wondering if it may be residual damage left from using RC.
I only change about 50 gallons at a time.

Thanks for the feed back, I'll check the strontium if I can find a test kit for it. I was worried I overdosed the potassium so that is why I stopped.

Thanks for the feed back. The monti caps & digis are in rough shape bur it's not affecting the daneas, etc. I wondered about a penny in the sump or something but have not seen anything. The ph swings from 8.1 - 8.5 throughout the day but it always has. For the most part the acro colour is good but the tips are dying but you are correct that blue skinned acros have lost colour. I had some serious temperature swings a while back but I can't see it affecting things like this. I think I'll do a few water changes and see if that helps.

Soon as i got back to my old one, tip burn effect stoped..I always skeptical about salt change..Just me

Greg,

I think you are experiencing a low nutrient system syndrome. It is quite possible that you are at very low NO3 and PO4 levels. Do a water change, and start overfeeding your system. Run your carbon and skimmer on full capasity, but feed heavily.

Vlad.

Thanks for the input everyone.
Vlad I have 70 fish in the tank and feed 5 times a day so I can't imagine the nutrients are too low, more than likely they're too high.

I will be sending some tank & freshly made water out to a lab for testing this week and hopefully I can get some answers from that.

Hmm.. then are you dosing any carbon sources? Are you overskimming? Even with that many fish and food, you can get to a low nutrient system. It may take some time, buy you can do it.

Let us know what you get in your lab results.

I sent the water off today so I should know by late next week. I am not using vodka or any sort carbon dosing with this tank. I am considering doing the biopellets but I'm holding off until I know what the present issue is. Thanks again for the feedback everyone.

So you are getting STN and burnt tips? How are your montiporas in terms of color? If you see some mucus on the montis, it is a bad sign. You may have nudis.

So there is a chance that you have to unrelated problems.

I have taken out and inspected/dipped both montis & acros. No sign of AEFW or nudis. I think there has to be some kind of chemical issue. I am afraid to do more water changes until I confirm the salt is not contaminated or something.
