Pulverized Limestone?
It is the stuff we use on baseball fields for lines/logos. The bag says pulverized limestone and it is a pure white powder with a chalk like texture. Can this be used as a cheap calcium/alk supplement?

That's likely to be calcium carbonate, which is more like sand, and won't do much as a supplement. A very tiny amount of it will dissolve in RO/DI water. You could try dissolving some in water, and testing the pH or alkalinity. Kalk is caustic enough that it'd be unpleasant to encounter as lines on a field.

It says non-caustic pulverized limestone on the bag. It seems to dissolve in fw, haven't tried sw or any tests yet.

If it's calcium carbonate, not very much is going to dissolve in fresh water, and virtual none in saltwater:
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...y2002/chem.htm You could check the pH of the solution. Limestone might get up to 9 or so in RO/DI water, but calcium hydroxide should bring it up over 12.

Who knows what else you may be adding, not worth the risk imo
