That's not a dumb question. Cloudy water is one possibility. Another is slimy films or something similar. This article gives dosing recommendations:

It's conservative, but if you're patient, the guidelines should be reasonably safe.

Hi! all,
I just found this site. It has a lot of useful information about vinegar dosing. I am currently mixing 30ml of distilled vinegar with 2 tsp of kalk.Several months ago, I also dosing Voka at 1ml per day on my 60g reef tank with SPS dominated. I noticed the brown coraline started to spread all over the tank and the rocks.
Does this is the effect of carbon dosing? should I stop mixing vinegar with kalk? Thanks,

Does this brown growth come off easily to the touch? If so, it's likely not coralline. Yes, the vinegar might be encouraging this growth, whatever it is. Let's get some more details, though, and work from there.

Hi again!
Finally i can get white destiled vinegar so i'll star dosing.
My tank as 300G, so i could start with 10ml/daily, right?

Can i just add 10ml of vinegar in a single dose (i don't have any dosing pump )?

The chart is based on actual water volume, so I'd probably start with 5ml, and work from there. Dosing all at once should be fine.

Not quite able to figure out how I should attack this, numbers wise. My tank levels are all ideal IMO, except for nitrate. I am dosing kalk through my ato and want to start adding vinegar for the purpose of carbon dosing to the ato solution. I currently add 15ml of vinegar to each gallon of top off water to help the kalk do its thing.

System is about 50 gal total and my top off is about a gal a day. So, if I am thinking correctly, I want to add the vinegar dose amount per gallon in my top off solution???

Nitrates are about 14ppm and I'm battling cyano, thus the reason I'm interested in carbon dosing. Tank is 3-4 months old and po4 is .02 via red sea pro test kit.

Thanks for any and all help. For some reason I'm having a difficult time calculating this out via the top off method.

Some carbon dosing might help, and your approach is basically fine, but the vinegar will decay in the topoff container unless you add some Kalk to raise the pH.

Thank you! Forgot to mention that I am running kalk in the top off as well. Just to summarize, I add my dose of vinegar per gallon of top off water, since I go through roughly a gallon per day?

That is a fine way to dose it if you choose to.

Hi guys! Me again lol!

I picked up a used dosing pump and am planning on dosing this route vs doing it solely through my ato. However, I would like to continue to use SOME vinegar with my kalk in my top off water to gain the benefits of that combo.

Question is: What's the minimum dose of vinegar I could run in my top off with kalk to gain the benefits? The rest will be dosed via a dosing pump.

As always, thanks a bunch

What benefit are you referring to? If it is dissolving more calcium hydroxide than in normal water, then the effect is essentially linear with the amount of vinegar added to it. So adding 1 mL vinegar per gallon of limewater will produce hardly any effect relative to adding 45 mL vinegar per gallon of limewater.

There's any automatic way to add vinegar directly to kalk?
I mean any way other then manually add vinegar to kalk being the kalk in a kalk reactor (directly connected to ATO system).

I must've been mistaken. I was under the impression that the addition of vinegar made the available calcium more stable and/or more potent.

For example that 2 tsp kalk per gallon of ato would provide more calcium with simply the addiction of vinegar, but judging from this post I gather I am NOT correct?

It is simply a matter of being able to dissolve more kalk per gallon then with plain water alone?

Vinegar heaps the calcium hydroxide dissolve to a greater extent by reducing the pH. That's all it does with respect to calcium and alkalinity. 45 mL per gallon of limewater might let 3 teaspoons of calcium hydroxide dissolve instead of 2.

Then in the tank it helps drive bacterial growth as an organic carbon addition.

I've not heard of a good way to do this with a reactor, only with a still reservoir type of setup.

So guys I've been dosing 5ml daily of kalk saturated vinegar for a few of weeks. My refugium is doing great. My chaeto is growing well and I have HA growing in the fuge as well.

However, in my main display I have some cyano and small tumbleweed areas of HA. I've been doing weekly 10% water changes. I run GFO and a small amount (I just removed) of ROX carbon. No detectable NO AND PO per salifert.

Should increase from 5ml? Should I just stay the coarse? Thoughts?

Is the vinegar dosing causing the issue?

How big is the tank?

FWIW, adding iron can sometimes help macroalgae outcompete hair algae in a refugium. It did for me, although I do not recall whether the refugiuma t the time was primarily Chaetomorpha or Caulerpa.

Total water volume is approx 140 gallons. How would I add iron? Supplement?

Currently I have chaeto in the sump. I've attached some pics.

Iron would be from a DIY supplement, or a commercial product. Here's a thread:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1807946

I'd also double the vinegar and watch for a week or so.

Will do.

Randy, what am I looking for the vinegar to do? Help with my algae/cyano problem?

Or, could it be contributing to the problem? I've noticed my live sand becoming clumpy in some areas.

Thanks for your help.
