Slim overflow, low profile and quiet.

Just got my new tank with a slim overflow. Havent seen anyone on RC with this design so thought i would share as it is very quiet and takes up almost no space in the tank. No more need for dursos etc which have never been absolutely silent (IMHO ofcourse). I can honestly say that the only sound coming from this tank at the moment is the vortechs ramping up and the ripple of the water from the return.

Here is 2 pics, sorry for the quality.

How much flow can you put through it?

I am obviously not sure on the exact amount of flow, but some huge tanks locally use this kind of overflow and in conjunction with surge device so i dont think flow through would be a problem at all.

Yeah I cant tell at all where it is... Can you give a bit better explanation as to what the system is? How it works?

exactly !

Maybe this will give a better idea, mine just drained through the base and not the back panel. And returns also done skinny and entering through the base.

Interesting concept. Wonder why it's not mass produced in reef-ready tanks?

here is a short clip, tv in the background and you can hear the vortech a bit (just to show how quiet this system is)

this specific tank was made by a lfs in SA (idol marine) but a couple of shops in SA use this design on their up market tanks.

this works great with rimless tanks where you want that very clean/uncluttered feel.

Is it deep enough front to back to attach bulkheads and catch any fish that might go over the top ?

You attach your bulkhead to a square piece of glass and then silicone that over the hole

this is the over all look underneath

the space depends on the thickness of glass you use to "strut" the front panel of the overflow, usually 5-6mm

That is very cool! Don't get the bulkhead but I like the concept of the wall a lot. Would be worried about fish too.

Edit: Would it be safer with 2 drains?

This tank was only 1400x600x600 with a 3000lph return pump so the one line was fine, but there was space for 3 more should it have been required. I always like redundency in tanks so two lines would give you peace of mind. But having said that, this tank ran for over a year with no issues, most snails and the like cant fit into the small space between the rear panel and "overflow glass"

Thanks! Definitely going to consider this when I eventually upgrade.

They used the slimline overflow on this supersized tank, pic of the underbelly...

Here you can see what i mean by low profile on a rimless

I personally wouldn't be comfortable with that bulkhead set up. You only have on chance and it better not leak.

Snails may not be able to get back there but a lot of the fish we keep could easily go over the lip with no way to retrieve them.

anything that can fit over will fit through the pipe and will end up in the sump or filter sock

Interesting. I am still trying to grasp this concept but I do have a question. Does algae grow between the two glass panes and if so how do you clean?

Very interesting.

I think you could modify a bulkhead fitting to look very shallow there...

If you look Denadai's build he seems to be doing something similar.

Both are really cool.

Tanks are built with glass and silicone, so i dont see a problem sticking the bulkead to the tank with glass and silicone, works well IMO, no fidling in tight spaces to get the bulkhead tightend etc.

The overflow plumbing surely isnt fail proof. I foresee water on the floor when it plugs
