strange algae growing on discosoma

this microalgae appeared at about the same time as a cynaobacteria outbreak in the tank, this was successfully controlled by removal and a reduction in the hours of light. Then i noticed a growth on one of the discosoma, at first i thought it was some sort of sexual growth on the part of the discosoma but i cant find any info regarding this.

i removed the piece of live rock from the tank and noticed it was attached to the rock not the discosoma, it is soft and gelatanous to the touch but also ridgid (its keeps its upright shape when out of the water).

after a rapid spurt of growth it now appears to have stopped growing. should i leave it alone or harvest it?

thanks

thanks for the reply, i'll leave it alone and perhaps propogate the discoma away from it as they don't appear to be thriving like they were before the algae arrived.

Hi John,

I don't think the one I have is one of the Halymania species. It has a different consistency to touch. Halymania is slimy, this one is less so and it feels like "paper" when rubbing the leaves.

this one is a single frond, all the pictures of the halymenia sp i can find descibe it as having several flat flexible fronds, and this one is quite ridgid, keeping its cup like shapoe evn out of the water.
