Rock bin suggestions?
After recently taking down my 10 gallon and re-scaping my 29 gallon, I have quite an excess of rock with nowhere to put it. I have been thinking of making a small rock bin to keep the extra rock in my basement. Ideas/suggestions? Pictures would be bomb =)

Have you considered turning the ten gallon into a sump and storing the rock there ?
If you're going to store it in a basement in Mn I'd suggest you get a cooler that will hold about double the amount of rock you'll be storing so there's enough water/room to create some circulation. You'll need a powerhead and heater too even though the cooler will cut down on the temp drop.

I thought about that, yes. However when I was rearranging the rockwork I found a 13 gallon plastic garbage can to set the rock in that I thought would make a decent rock bin, at least for the time being. I figured I could use a heater, a few airstones, and a simple florescent light fixture on a timer. Now that you mention it though, a powerhead would be a great idea. What should the salinity be kept at, and how carefully should I monitor it? Would it be a good idea to add a few inverts or, perhaps later on, a damsel or two when I get a larger bin or rubbermaid tub?

Alrighty, so here is what I did with all my rock.
- Plastic bin, approximately 15-18 gallons. - Small HOB filter, likely only rated for 10-15 gallons but it will do for now. - 10 Gallon light fixture with two coralife mini compact 50/50 bulbs - Timer set 8hr light schedule. - Small heater that heats up to about 77* F. - Salinity is currently at about .021. Thoughts? |
