I'm always amazed to see the flashes/color shifts in the Tennenti tang at school. I have to imagine they're even more pronounced in the Achilles.

this fish is about 5" long. Achilles are prone to get crypto. As many here already know, they require a proper environment to thrive. Oxygen saturation (read: great water movement) is a basic requirement IMO along with lots of swimming room.

I remember seeing them in the Molokini crater off Maui, and over by Lanai'i. They were litterally tucked up at the steep and rocky shore line getting pounded by waves and bubbles. Gotta be tough to replicate that sort of scenario in a home aquarium.

Any dietary issues Gary?

no- this fish was originally a snob for nori but now it eats everything including Spectrum pellets

I didn't realize Achilles had blue around the eyes at night until I snapped this today

"blue eyes" are also used when this fish is angry

Beautiful! This is one of my all time favorite fish. I actually saw a juvenile in the LFS yesterday and was tempted. I resisted because I already have a clown tang and and a kole tang and they are both pretty aggressive. Don't want to chance a war.

How long have you had your two fishes? How large is your Clown Tang?

After scrolling through many pix of my reef aquarium I've noticed that the Achilles is camera shy and it appears in very few of my shots.
On the other hand, my Powder Blue is NOT camera shy and appears in almost every random shot.

I've had them about a year. The clown is now about 5-6 " tip to tail. He is really beautiful but he thinks he owns the tank. My Kole is pretty docile (also very beautiful - dark puple with yellow eyes) but when the clown pushes it he stands up and doesn't take any crap.

I got him very small, like 2 inches and put him in QT for 6 weeks. Like your Achilles, he was extremely picky and so shy that I never got him to eat when I was near the tank. Had to mix practically every food I had to get him to eat, and there for a while I wasn't sure he was going to make it (got pretty thin). Then he just started eating and picking up weight. There was the initial 3-day war with the Kole (who was in first and bigger than the clown at the time). But they settled down to get along pretty well ... for the most part, kind of like a married couple. :P

You're lucky. Clown Tangs are often sold at a small size to unsuspecting aquarists that don't know what they're doing. The little ones often don't make it. It sounds like you know what your doing...congrats!
I would definitely not put a small Achilles in with that Clown Tang.

Don't you have issues with it and your corals? How long have you had that? It's just beautiful.

I always wanted one but have a lot of LPS and some SPS and didn't want to risk it.

Yeah, that's what I hear. Sohals... sigh, another on the top of my list of Favorites.

The Clown grew pretty fast at first but has slowed down some. There's also a Two-barred Rabbitfish in the mix ... biggest fish in the tank. He's about 2 inches longer than the Clown Tang and is currently Boss of the tank (don't think that'll last too much longer).

So you don't have 'issues' between the Achilles and the Blue PT?
