86ed from the Tank

Sooooooooo I think Edward the emerald crab number is up. I have raised him since he was a lil baby. and now hes a BEAST. Nightime has fallen on the tank.. and i have broke out the flashlight and caught Edward nipping at my sps.. and zoas... maybe cleaning but to much of a dice roll for me..

Everyone say bye to Edward.. on this note how do people feel about inverts and Zoas.. You have them? good bad do share.

LOL I like the pic. My emerald has never touched a coral a day in his life. Had him almost a year now. How do you kick him out after naming the lil fella?

Took out EVERY red mithrax from my tank because 1) they were eating the skeleton and tissue on my chalices and 2) I caught them pulling at the skirts of the zoas trying to pull polyps off for yummies.

Lmao... Dude, you don't get out much do you?

I don't trust any crabs in my reef. Over the years I have seen way too many species develop a taste for corals seemingly overnight...

My emerald will clean inbetween them at night but not pick at them. He on ocassion go for free food when i feed my sun corals. (rare) i just shoo him away. I do watch my tank alot at night and never noticed anything with him.

on the other hand. I just banished 2 pep shrimp for killing my blaso's and a few acans...cant say they ever really messed with my zoa's tho...CB was always fine too. I have harlequin shrimp what kinda invert u talkin here? Id say dont do camel or pep if u directly feed any corals. My peps were trapped and sent to the dungon! Where lil troble makers get sent to when they are nawtee and they never come back

I'm glad you caught and removed him. They can not be trusted with zoanthids. If anyone still has them in their tanks, if they haven't touched your zoas, sooner or later, they will. It doesn't matter how long you have had them. See links and links within the links below.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...=mucho+emerald

Emerald crabs as juvis, whose shell is less than the diameter of a quarter are herbivores, once their shell reaches the diamter of a quarter, ( adulthood ), they become omnivores. They are excellent grazers. Some have had great success with them with removing bubble algae. But if you are paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for polyps with this meat grinder in your tank, you're gonna find out sooner or later unfortunately as many others have. They are very unpredictable and not to be trusted. Not trying to create a scare, just putting it out there.

Thanks for sharing this Friday Night.

So you're Team Jacob now, no more Team Edward?

I love his attitude in the pic. Think there's enough meat in those claws to bother with dropping him in some boiling water and coating his tender flesh with melted butter? It would be the ultimate revenge.

Not trying to be smart mouth or anything, but you do know that is not an emerald crab in the pic you provide? Again, no disrespect or trying to make you look bad or anything, but that is Mantis Shrimp.

Wow he/she is beautiful. I have never kept a mantis before. Any special requirements? I am sure the zoas above him feel very safe.

Thanks, its a HE. No special requirements. Hes in a 20g. Hes about 5 in. He loves bashing things, ie...live rock, hard corals....bad emerald crabs, or bad pep shrimp, bad snails....u get the idea. Ive had em 3 months now and he's such a smart animal. I wont hijack dood's thread anymore if you want to see more or read more go here
http://www.livingreefs.com/mantis-ta...ld-t30443.html

Sorry your having to get rid of your emerald. Honestly my emerald was the first living thing in my reef tank and hes still there.......my mantis would gladly smash your emerlads face in and eat him for dinner tho. His first dinner was an emerald. =)

Well there can be 2 things that are clicking in your buddies tank. Could also be a pistol shrimp. I have a pistol in my reef tank and if my mantis wasnt so big it would prolly sound the same. When my mantis hits, i can tell its not a pistol shrimp. The vids really dont do it justice seeing as it was done on my iphone. I have more vids of him smashing things on my account. I barley see my pistol so its hard to show u the diff. Usually a pistol's clicking will be quicker....like ...bang..bang. where as a mantis would be like BANG....BANG...

Im going to keeping a close eye on my emerld tho now seeing as im diving into the more expensive Zoa's. Thanks for the heads up! I had no problem trapping mine at night on accident with the gadorade bottle trap. You too should have no issues IMO

I read it 3 times. Not sure how I struck a nerve. Just wasn't sure if you knew it was a mantis or not. I certainly wasn't trying to be rude or anything which is why I said so. Sorry if you took it that way.

They are pretty though, wow.

Do you have a lot of polyps in your tank? Just curious.
