Adjustable Weir Overflow/Skimmer box design
I purchased a great used tank but it only has a single 1.5" bulkhead hole drilled in the tempered back wall .
So my problem is to design an adjustable weir skimmer box that can meet the following criteria. 1) quiet as possible 2) effective surface skimming 3) accommodate different flow rates 4) easy setup and adjusting of water level 5) minimize the chance for snail and fish entry 5) DIY Next I setting other variables. 1) I want the box to house a 90deg pvc fitting with an intake screen 2) Black Closed Cell acrylic 3/8” stock material 3) overall dimensions 9”high by 3.75” wide by 9” tall This is what I cam e up with. The acrylic is cut, shipped and should be arriving today. I’ll use my old Bridgeport J head milling machine to cut the slots. What are your thoughts? Description;
1) the lid is cut to fit into the assembled box but remain sitting on top 2) The top lip of the box has been machined to have a ¼” slit all the way around for surface skimming 3) The front has ¼” slits cut in 3” long. 4) The adjustable weir plate slides along using the blue slots and secured using the black screws. The solution to all of my problems, hopefully. What would you do different or what problems do you see? |

It's pretty striaght forward from the photos. The extension blocks are on the back to space the box off the tank back wall. This allows for surface skimming of more water.
The middle spacer block and the overflow box have a hole cut large enough so the bulkhead only seals on the back spacer block. With 1/2" glass, the external 3/8" overflow box and the 3/8" skimmer box I needed to recess the bulkhead to be able to assemble everything. There is enough room in the skimmer box to thread a 1.5" bulkhead strainer into the bulkhead. Just more protection from fish/inverts from making it into the sump. |
