Question about Iodine test kit pro

Please refer to this thread:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2086465

I posted a question there and a knowledgeable poster seems to think this test kit may not be testing total Iodine content in our tanks, but rather just molecular iodine. Is this true, and If so, how will this test kit benefit us?

His comments were:

I just watched their video and the only reference the gentleman made was to I2 (molecular iodine) at the very beginning. On the test kit it states I2 as well. If this is the case, the kit is not much good for measuring the total iodine in a marine tank, since I2 will quickly break down into other products once introduced.

Good morning,
I am following your thread, and I'm happy to inform you, that out Iodine test kit DO test total Iodine.
We put the extra dime to get to a better test kit, with top of the line reagents and accessories.
All of our management, R&D etc. are hobbyists,
I can tell you we put a lot of thought in our new line of the RCP (Reef Care Program), in order for the end user to enjoy ease of use, comfort and accuracy.

As for the mark and naming, all of our test kit have the known chemical symbol (Ca, Mg, I2), since this is the common trademark that all of us know.
I2 is better known than total Iodine, or Iodide\Iodate, and the videos online needs to keep it simple and understandable to the general public.
Some like you, know more than others and I always enjoy interacting with such individuals, it keeps things interesting.

Thank you for a great question, I hope I helped.
If you have any more questions- I’m here.
All the best,
Aviad

Hello,

Got the test kit and used it today. Works quite well, except a few complaints:

Syringe is very hard to use. It is very tight, but should loosen up after some use.

Iodine, and iron test kits were a breeze to use. Very well constructed. For those wondering I got readings of .09 for iodine, and 0 for iron. I have been dosing Lugols, and thus it explains my elevated iodine levels. Need to stop that!

I also did like the potassium test kit. Time consuming, but it seems accurate. My only complaint is the the color change from purple to blue. It is a little hard to distinguish. Is there any way to visually enhance the color change at the end?

I know on seachem test kits you can add more of the last reagent that changes the color of the test vial to get a more prominent change. On this kit you add two drops, would adding 3 or 4 possibly help see the color change better?

Also, on the potassium test kit should I be looking for the first change to blue, even though it may be slightly darker?

Thanks.

Fe (Iron) is one of the fastest elements to be consumed by a vast variety of creatures.
If it is not supplemented on a daily base, it would deplete rather quickly.
Did you watch the K-Test kit video?
The color intensity of the test may vary due to different water parameters and presence of organic matter.
As for adding more indicator reagent, I don’t think there is a problem, I’ll double check that.
I'll let you know.
All the best,
Aviad

Hi, I'm still abit confused regarding which species of iodine are measured. The directions in the kit indicate total iodine is measured as iodate(IO3-) and iodide(I-). The standard bottle and the card are labled I2. So while it's clearly stated per the directions that the test accounts for iodide and iodate, I'd like to know if the result reflects any I2 as well or is it assumed , any I2 it will all have reacted and gone to iodide or iodate.

Hi,
Our kit tests total Iodine.
We use I2 chemical symbol because it is better known than total Iodine, or Iodide\Iodate.
We need to keep it simple and understandable to the general public.
I2 when dissolved is found in the ionic form.(as you probably already know)
I hope I made it clear now.
All the best,
Aviad
