Mangroves Dead?

Ok so I got 5 mangroves off a friend who had them in a bucket of saltwater kept on a window ledge. When I got them they looked quite healthy and there was a few leaves and large roots on them.

I put them in my tank, secured to bamboo with rubber bands to keep them propped up. I was still waiting to get a light for the tank so they went for about 2 weeks without.

Now... i got a double ended 150w 10k metal halide with brand new bulb and have it suspended over the tank roughly 2 foot from the mangroves.

Its been about 6 weeks now and all the leaves died and 3 of them have gone brown from top to bottom so I cut them right back (was actually able to snap it because it was dried out) The roots a still very large and seem fine but the stalk is dried up.

Are they gone or is there something I can do for them? Ive started to water them with RO water twice a day but its too early to see if this is helping.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cant find much info on them.

Michael

i dont think they liked to be moved and drop their leaves. as well, going from natural light from the window, witch is enough light, to intense MH most likely didn't help. keep misting them daily with fresh water and i bet they will grow again. (it may take awhile) keep us posted.

+1 on having a brown top mangrove come back.

Sometimes when they are stressed looking at root growth is the only way to know for sure if they are dead or not. I also can tell if they are dead sometimes by the feeling of the green parts of the stalk, if it is soft at all that is a bad sign.

Little update,

The mangrove stalks still apear quite dried out and show no signs of growth but the roots seem to be growing steadily. Maybe the metal halide is too intense and the stalks wont grow under it.

Im considering changing it and getting a t5 light. On a better note though the algae in the tank is growing like nuts so its kind of a dilema having great growth with algae and poor growth with mangroves!

mine looks to be in salinity shock; soft squishy stalk and droopy leaves. Any way to fix this?
