New 40 Breeder Build

After having to shut down my 93 gallon cube due to some health issues I decided to slowly start putting together a 40 breeder. Picked up the tank at Petco for $40. I always seemed to have extra parts after every tank I started so I put them to good use and started the tank this week. Drilled all four holes in about half an hour. I'm helping my son set up his Radion lit 60 cube this weekend which I'm sure will outshine (no pun intended) my humble little system.

Equipment:
2 MP10w ES
2 Gl*******s 300 gph overflows
2 Gl*******s 3/4" returns with flow accelerators
Mag 5 return
SWC 120 cone skimmer
500 watt titanium heater
Pinpoint thermometer
TLF Phosban reactor
20 long center return sump
JBJ ATO
36" Current Outer Orbit (2 x 150 watt HQI w/4 x 39 watt T-5's)

fish wish list (I won't get all of them but I'll buy them as I find them):
-Yellowbar Hogfish
-White Cap Goby
-dwarf or pygmy angelfish
-Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish
-Hawaiian Flame Wrasse
-Swales Basslet

Looks like a sweet setup. Unfortunately, its not a nano.

I think quite a few people here would disagree with that. Thanks!

Great looking tank and start! I too am going to start a 40b, I was going to do a 30b cuz I wan't to be clasified as a nano, but IMO a 40b is a nano, and if it's not, it isn't a large tank either so whare do I put the build?

Reef Discussion is the place for "normal" size tanks, there are only Special Interest Groups for large or small tanks.

Sorry, I am not trying to hate here, I think the tank looks solid. Just wanted to give a heads up as the mods will end up relocating the thread if they notice it

I thought my first Yasha Haze had died so I bought a pair with a pair of pistol shrimp I found on Sunday. Well I now have three Yasha Hazes and three Randall's Pistol Shrimp since the original re-emerged. Also can anyone suggest another fish for me to add eventually. I've been thinking about a White Cap Goby or a Yellow Bar Hogfish. I currently have a Yellow Fin Flasher Wrasse, a Yellow Assessor, three Yasha's and a Green Banded Goby. Can I get away with another flasher wrasse? I don't really like clowns (FYI).

ORA Yellow Assessor

Green Banded Goby

Yasha Haze Goby w/shrimp

Here you go. I don't know how much you'll be able to discern from the pics but they're the best I can get.

No new tank additions but we got bored at work today so I finally got the octopus tattoo I've been wanting for years.

Hey I have a question on your light choice...I am doing a 40g breeder build with my son and im debating on either 2 3 bulb t-5 s or 4 t5s and a 250w HQI? What so you think would be best for a sps dominant tank... this is my build check it out and maybe you can help me out with my delema. Btw your tank is looking good!

Thank you! IMO on the lighting. When just my four T5 bulbs are on I feel like it would be inadequate for SPS so i would go with the HQI. The only problem you may have is one MH bulb over a 36" tank will cause some spotlighting. I also feel like a 150 watt HQI is adequate to penetrate to the bottom of a 40 breeder. No matter what you do, good luck with your build! My son and I put together a 60 cube for him lit with a Radion over the holidays.

Came home to my pink and blue yuma gone. Just gone. No trace. It was there this morning. Maybe my Coral Beauty got hungry...

Awesome Tat and great looking setup. Sorry to hear about the Yuma, angels can be so good one moment, then destroy a beautiful colony the next!

Never mind. Found the yuma face down stuck to the Vortech this morning. I guess it needed a change of venue.

I've been noticing a lot of tiny detritus floating around the aquarium lately so I decided to change from 200 micron filter socks to 50 micron filter socks. I got them in today, gave them a quick bleaching immediately and put one in the sump tonight. Within an hour I noticed that most of the floating debris was clearing up. I'm hoping by morning my small investment will have paid off.

Probably not. I'd have to tear my tank apart.
