The AI Sols might be ok that high up, but it appears you are getting ~120 degree spread on the DIY fixture (just guessing this from the light spread on the wall). It looks to me that you are loosing the the majority of the light long before it reaches the tank... Thats probably why it seems to make a minimal impact. I personally would drop it down about 2 feet to see what it looks like.

By the way were these purple LEDs the 420nm Actinic Violet LED (from aquastyle), or the Epileds LED 3W Ultra Violet(UV) or something different?
All the LED's in my DIY fixture have 60 degree optics. There is some light spillage on the wall but a majority of light goes into the tank. I am already losing coverage on the edges of my aquarium with this setup. If I lower it anymore then I get even worse spotlighting. The leds were purchased from led group buy (cant link).

There is something wrong here, look at the lines I drew here, I drew a 90 degree angle and then followed the line of your light as it hit the wall, if that angle is 30 degrees (at least on the greens) im a monkeys fricking uncle:

I think some manufacturer is playing fast and loose with their measurements, because if that is less than 50 degrees I would be really suprised. Its possible the picture is distorting it, but I doubt it is that much.

The True Violets are clearly the exact same ones I have, I got mine from groupbuy too.

I think it's just the way the pic was edited. This is a less edited version of the same photo. I have been extremely happy with my results from adding green, red and Violets. You can see all the photos at www.photobucket.com/210g
