That sucks! Any idea what's causing it? Some people have it go crazy right after feeding, dosing, water change, etc and can turn it down for a day or two when they know its gonna happen.

I had this happen once and then I made a new waste container from a big piece of PVC (capped on one end). The waste from my skimmer cup essentially drains right into the top of the PVC tube and I drilled a hole about 4 inches lower (which is still above the water line) with a drain that goes back into the sump. I know! A lot of people shake their head about skimmate going back in the sump but I don’t see the harm (when you’re dealing with an overactive skimmer). When my skimmer goes wild the (basically clean) water flows out the skimmer cup, fills up the pvc waste container, and then drains into the sump (instead of the floor). If there was any real skimmate in there to begin with, it usually stays on the bottom of the PVC tube anyway and the water just flows over and out.
I think it’s a foolproof design, and it doesn’t require float switches or shutting down the skimmer. The only time it ever drains back into the sump is when the skimmer goes wild so it’s not like its dumping sludge back in there. It would probably take a month of not checking my skimmer to get enough skimmate to actually start doing that. |

That's pretty clever. I have it emptying into a stupid simply lemonaid container that usually sits in my sump but I always seem to take it out when I clean and forget to put it back in. I am not a smart man.
