my latest failure

The camera is just a little Canon Powershot S95, but I'm using it on full manual mode with a tripod and timer. I shot so many pics last night I can't remember the settings used here. Another problem is I have no post processing software.

Ironically, I bought a used D70 recently, but so far I can barely figure out how to turn it on.

It really doesn't matter. In that pic, the white balance is still off. Read the stickys above and work on learning how to turn on the D70. There are some freeware post processing stuff out there. You can also pick up Photoshop Elements for about 70 bucks. Until you shoot in RAW, it will always be hit or miss. You can also get an exif viewer and go back and check the camera's settings on the pic, but IMHO, it ain't worth it.

You can shoot in raw with the S95 and it came with Digital Photo Pro. DPP will show you the settings for any given photo. And you can view and process Canon raw files.

Yes, that's gonna help a lot, thanks! I never downloaded the software when I bought the S95. Thank goodness I kept it at least!

The only software I've had until now is something called XnView. It too will view and (to some extent at least) process RAW files, but once again I'm clueless how to use it. The pics look almost black-and-white when I view them in RAW, and I've never figured out how to get the color back into them.

You should be able to view the EXIF info for the settings that were used.

The color shown in a RAW file is generally not right until it's had the color temperature set (been white balanced). Setting the color temp at the right value will yield a color accurate image of the original shot, even under super blue reef lighting. That's one reason why raw rocks so hard in this photography niche.
