No.
Some people do, but like everything else it's going to have to be kept clean. You might want to add a couple small pieces of live rock along with the chaeto though. (baseball size)

I have a 6" DSB in my refugium just for kicks, I doubt it does much denitrification. Also have a cryptic zone above the DSB and 15 lbs of LR rubble above that. Then a few inches of chaeto and caulerpa. But I have a 14" deep refugium so I had to stick something in it besides algae.

My refugium is 2' x 2' x 12" and has 6+" of fine sand, macro algae and some LR. It's been running for 2 years and I always have zero nitrates.

We've run Mineral Mud and DSB, I think DSB works better.

I guess it depends on what you want out of your refugium. If you want it to reduce nitrates and it is big enough, a DSB can help. If you intend to do your nutrient export with cheato, ATS, or other algaes you don't need it.
If you want it to grown lots of pods, also not needed, just live rocks and cheato. I chose to have one to grow pods, as you see it works well for that! |
