Doing it Right the First Time

I am getting back to reefing after a long absence, and am looking for some advice. I had a very stable tank over ten years ago with a nice Perc, but no host nem. In deciding to get back in, my goal is to have a perc or false perc couple in a host Magnifica as the main focus of my efforts.

I've done some research, and I know that I picked one of the most difficult nems to keep. I think I was successful the first time I had a reef tank because I am analytical, patient, and very methodical, and I want to focus those skills on this project. My tank is still several months from reality, as I am in the planning process and building DIY LEDs. The tank will be a 95g 36 X 24 X 24.

If you were to start out, like me, in the planning phase, what would you do to best assure success? I realize it may be some time before I achieve my goal but, as I said, I'm patient and methodical. I know it may be a year or more before the tank and my skills are ready. I may be a little OCD, but I think if I plan for this goal from day one, I'll have an advantage.

Here are my questions:

Would you start out with a easier to keep nem to develop the skills? If so, which one?

What should I make sure I do not put into the tank that will cause problems for the nem and clowns?

My system will have an Apex controller- what pumps would be best for good current? Tunze? Vortech? How many and which models?

What is the one thing you wish you knew before going down this clownfish/host road?

Thanks for your input.

Ray
