Alkalinity issues... Am i doing it wrong?

Hello,

I have a 2 year old 28g and being very successful so far, but I've been worried about my alkalinity...
For quite a time I've been having my kH levels never to get over 7-8 and sometimes it gets down to 6. My calcium levels are always at 400-420 and mag is about 1200. Been dosing Tropic Marin bio-calcium and bio-magnesium.

My questions are: is my level of kH too low? am I in a risk of some trouble? Should I do something to rise it up?

Thank you!

I'm reading those articles all over again and been trying really hard to understand. Lol. But what I've been having a hard time to figure is why even with all my params in check my kH is always low.

Do you have corals? Are you dosing alk? You may need to. Corals can suck up alkalinity at a surprising rate sometimes.

Because you are not adding enough alkalinity to offset the demand.

You can add more of the Biocalcium each day (no, it won't push calcium up too much but will boost alkalinity) until you get to your target, or you can just use baking soda (but that will allow calcium to decline steadily). Or you could use a two part or limewater, which are both excellent methods.

Thank you Randy, that was my doubt, if the low kH was due to insufficient supplementation.

I would also boost your magnesium to 1350, 1200 is low.

true all above. i would start with mag, bring it up 1300+ ideally 1300-1450 range. once thats stable then alk and calcium. use a reef calculator plot in ur product type and tank volume and it will give u the results in how much u should be dosing.

Note: if mag levels are low ur cal and alk will never stable.
