DIY Acrylic Trap & Box

Hey,

Just thought I'd share the trap I'm building. I'm almost finished just need to drill some holes for a feeding tube on the top, and two holes and small diameter acrylic rods to hinge the door back and forth. I'll use a piece of fishing line to move the door.

I am thinking of adding a piece to the edge of one side of the box so I can attach a magnet to it to help hold the box in place in my tank.

The white box is for a holding pen, I plan to make a eggcrate house and roof with it for my fuge to hold my wrasse for a couple of weeks.

I used a table saw and some weldon 16.

Thanks. If it works like the one I borrow from my LFS than it will be awesome. I just need to work out how I will swing the door closed.

Anybody know the best way to drill the holes so I don't crack the acrylic? Any pointers on drilling a 3/4" hole and two 1/4" holes? Should I put a bunch of masking tape where I will drill?

Maybe you can make me a holding tank that I can hook over the edge of my main tank and have the holding tank in with my main tank, making it less stressful adding new fish. I can't find one that is big enough

Like an acclimate? Marine Depot has those and they work well. http://www.marinedepot.com/Reef_Gent...MIATTK-vi.html I have one you could borrow if you want. I am new at this and wouldn't want to trust my build on someones tank haha plus I have to travel to my Dad's to do the work as I don't have room for any tools at my apartment. So sorry not for hire hehe

You can use the code "nocaltax" and it will save you on the taxes. Also if you are near Garden Grove you can will call to save on the shipping. I bought mine at the SCMAS / Marine Depot scratch and dent sale, it was missing the top sliding piece but I think I paid like 25 dollars for it. If you can wait until SCMAS posts another one of those sales. My guess though it wouldn't be until the beginning of next year.

So I bought 3/4 Acrylic Tubing for the feeder, and 1/4" solid rod for the hinges I'm gonna attempt on the rotating door. I have extra if anyone needs any as I had to buy 6 foot sections of each. I'll only need like 6" of each so ya...

But dang those plastic drill bits were expensive. Those set me back 25 for the two sizes. There went my budget!

Here is the bit I used to drill the holes.

I used a 1/4 bit similar to the above and drilled the door on both ends. As well as holes through the box to run the rod through.

And here is a pic of the rod ran through the bottom of the box and into the door. I plan to cut the excess and glue a little square acylic tab to hold the rod.

The top will have a key attached to the rod so I can tie a string and wrap it around so I can spin the door closed.

I have been using the single or two flute step drill and they work really well for super cheap... Got them at harbor freight...

Do you mean the ones for acrylic like weld on 3, 4, 16 or all weld on products? I wonder if we can order from internet and have it delivered to LA County or is that not allowed either? I recently tried some acrylic projects and would like to know more about the ban.

Cody if you ever need custom acrylic, I have access to a waterjet and can cut anything to size, cut quality and accuracy is ridiculous. I used it to make my C2C overflow box and it's awesome.

Phil,
If Cody can't get to it let me know and I'll build you a cover.

Cool. After a nightmarish, tank-breaking down, catch of my talbot damsel, I've been thinking of building something like this.. Not sure of what design I'll go with yet.

How will you swing the door closed remotely? Is this to catch fish, I assume?
