Tiny bit of success….. FINALLY…
Tiny bit of success….. FINALLY…
Well as Jo aka SaltyJo puts it “If first you don't suceed....try try try” Well I haven’t given up yet… Here is my tiny bit and I mean very tiny.. Batch #15 had split hatchings like always… Hatched on two nights May 24th & 25th…. Had about 30 in total to hatch only for my stupidity and did not secure the airline tubing down and it had fallen out of the tank so only 2 had made it till one day I found one of the two stuck on the tubing do not know how that happened so now I only have 1 left from batch #15 and it is now 20dph but I do not see any head strips at all on it… Now comes along Batch #16 also again a split hatch nights… I really hate that…. They ate about ¾ of the eggs so I had very little to hatch 4 hatched on June 4th and the other 4 to hatch on June 5th.. Well I am down to 5 left and I am afraid that one will go because he is a jumper… and he is very tiny compared to the others. He has popped up out of the water a couple of times.... and they are now 9dph.. What I do not understand is that the one left from batch 15 which is 11 days older is the same size as the larger ones from batch #16 and I still can’t see any head strips or markings at all.. So that is my tiny, tiny success story for now… Awaiting for batch #17 to hatch and go news is that there is still a good amount of eggs left on the rock as of last night but they always seem to get thinned out by the time hatch night comes along.. Which will be on either the 3 nights 16th 17th or the 18th…. I really need to figure out how to get them to hatch on ONE Night. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated |

Good deal. These things are a lot tougher then I though as well. I guess I'm just thankful that they give us so many attempts to get it correct.

Glad to see that you are still at it Mary. This is the second year I have been trying to raise these guys and I still don't have it perfected. I do however have 30 little fry in one tank that seem to be doing well (almost 2 months old). And in another tank I have 1 that was hatched on Dec 31st. He is my real success.
Other than those the only thing I have perfected is about every way to kill clownfish fry. I have learned from my mistakes and am also just glad the parents keep giving me chances to get it right. |

Yep but I feel so bad when the die... Right now the batch that will be harching real soon are underneath the RBTA's I keep moving them off of the top of the eggs but they just seem to go back into the same position they were in before.

The development seems a bit delayed. What is your water temperature. This is what mine look like typically at 20 days old.

Temp is around 80 - 84... He is a True Perc and was told they develop at a slower rate not sure if that is correct or not..
He might have gotten the head stripe sooner but I checked him on 19dph and I could not see one. Wow yours is big.... Mine it tiny even the fry that hatched after his batch a few are already bigger then he is. |

What do you feed your fry to get that big at that early of an age?
Also how often do you feed them? |

Well my oldest is now 30dph and I saw last night a tiny white mark by his tail and he is starting to swim like a little clownfish.. But he stays on the bottom of the tank I cannot get a good picture of him he will not come up to the top of the tank nor the middle part of the tank... Does anyone know why this is???
And my others that are now 21 dph the runts stay at the top of the water swimming all over and one large one stays right in the corner will hardly if ever move from that spot..... |

Assuming there is nothing medically going on that is just where they feel comfortable. I have about 40 that stay pretty huddled up and then I have a few stragglers that never move from their spot. One it right next to the airline the other is next to a rock... Its normal from my limited experience.

Very nice how many little guys did you get past meta this time?
I'm still getting about 10-15. My best batch I got about 20. I'm still not sure what I'm doing wrong though. The last two batches I was able to get over 100 to last past the first night and hen they would slowly die off before reaching meta. The only thing I could guess is by about day two or three I start to run really low on rotifer. As a result I only feed the fry once a day just so that my rotifer will last a little longer. |

Well I got three left from the batch that hatched back in May and what is really strange is one of the three is extremely tiny while the other two are getting big along with the second stripe. It was a very small batch to begin with they had eatten a lot of the eggs. I think I collected a total of ten. But the next batch I collected in mid june I think I got about 100 but looks like I am down to maybe some where between 50 to maybe 70 and I noticed around day 14 they were getting their first stripes. I am thinking about putting the runt in with them since there are a lot of small ones in that batch. I did not bother to collect the batch that hatched last week since I was out of tanks but going to petco today hoping they are open to get one or two more tanks.

Thanks. I just went and picked up a couple more tanks this morning so I can collect the next batch due to hatch I am thinking Tuesday. There was a lot on the rock but now the eggs are blending in with the rock so I can't tell how many is even left on it right now.

Good to see they are developing. You will get runts in batches that just grow really slow. I have some that are about 1/4 the size of the bigger ones of the same age. Usually about 5% stay runts. I'm thinking of pulling a couple of runts out of growout and put him into a tank that I use to grow corals.
To get back to you about what I feed. Usually decap newly hatched brine from just before meta to about 5 days post meta and then they get weaned on TDO. I've also used some golden pearls. It is true that true perc's growth rate is slower than ocellaris. I've always been shocked at their quick growth rate. |

Thanks. When do you completely remove all covers that are around the fry tanks?
