75g softy reef, last fts before a heat related crash.
April 2011, overheated May 2011

January 2010, at what I consider its best.

A little bit of hair algae on the powerheads but otherwise mostly healthy and happy.

My 10g Mandarin Tank before the light fried on my 2x 10gallon setup.
After that I just decided it was cheaper to upgrade to a 25g and get a smaller and stronger light.

My very first reef, 15 gallons:

The tank was pretty old and cracked so I ended up upgrading to a panorama 16 gallon tank, and this is what it looked like at its height before it completely crashed, an event I attribute to the use of tap water.

Has anyone noticed that just about all of the tanks submitted contain almost all LPS/Softies? Just goes to show how keeping SPS is still a relatively new phenomenon in the hobby.

In part that's because, here in the US at least, it was illegal to collect and sell SPS until, what 2005. Something like that. Oh, and here's my reef, circa 1988-1990.

No it wasn't, "SPS" have been legal to collect and sell since the hobby started. Some of us successfully kept SPS over 20 years ago.

Thank you for the history lesson calore. I did not know that. I have been in the hobby since 1986 and the only corals available at that time were LPS, mushrooms and some paly's. I don't even recall hearing the term SPS. Now I know why. Thanks again.

I think it more has to do with the learning curve of SPS, and most of us starting with softies and moving on to LPS before finally, when we feel we are ready, taking the plunge into the world of SPS.

I respectfully disagree. I think it had more to do with the technology available at the time.

I kept my first SPS in the late 80's with some success and had seen various Acropora and Montipora at one Chicago wholesaler in particular throughout the late 80's and early 90's. Porites has been in the hobby as far back as I can remember, and probably as far back as the early days of the hobby. Live porites with dusters was one of the early staples. Overwhelmingly these perished by the time they made it to a LFS and typically shortly after arrival at the wholesaler if they made it that far. It probably wasn't until the mid 90's that SPS started popping up at a few select LFS's and by the late 90's there were some aquacultured corals available through places like the Tropicorium in Michigan.

Many of us could fairly easily take items from early in the reef hobby and have SPS thrive. Old powerheads, air driven protein skimmer and some 4300k or 5500k metal halides would do the trick. Better shipping practices, better holding facilities, and understanding the importance of maintaining calcium and alkalinity were the big leaps towards success of SPS in my opinion. Better protein skimmers, better pumps and better lighting just made it easier for the less advanced hobbyist.

My apologies Alexraptor, of course any new technology would also be considered part of a leaning curve. I think I was tired when I read your post. And of course I agree with you.
