He has not opened up in the week that I've had him. Do you think he's a gonner? Or just stubborn?

Duncans (which is what it is) can take a while to get used to a new tank, in my experience. Mine was closed for a couple weeks when I first got it. It's happy now with over 100 heads.

Depending on your lighting, you might want to move it up higher. If nothing else, it will get those potential heads sprouting out of the bottom of the stalk out of the sand.

Give it time... it is nowhere near being a goner. Looks healthy to me, just not happy at the moment.

Thank you for all your advice. I am very excited to see how he fills out. I have moved him out if the sand and up higher and I will get him some shrimp tomorrow.
