Week #23 coral of the week { Caulastrea } common names Candy coral, trumpet coral and bullseye coral. This coral is pictured on page 102 and 103 of the book the Corals a quick reference guide by Julian Sprung .

Every week I will post a new coral and I want you to post everything you know about this particular coral. Everything from common names, how hardy they are, water temp, water flow, lighting, water parameters, fraging, spawning, related corals, scientific names, feeding, best ways to ship, etc. Post your pictures for identification. Please tell us about your system so others can duplicate your success. Also email me for request on which corals you would like to see in this section.

Very nice. Yours looks more like an open brain with the red outside and green centers. Mine is just pink.

IME, it is a somewhat aggressive coral but also very easy to keep. Some of the heads on mine are starting to split also.

Where did you get that awesome coral? I've never seen one with such intense color. What kind of lighting do you have?

the photos were not altered a bit. it's a 75g with 2 - 110w aquasun's, 2 - 110w daylights, and 3 - 110w actinics. yes, 770w of VHO on the 75g.

One of the centerpieces of my reef tank, beautiful colors. One of my Ocellaris Clowns has adopted it is it's host and sleeps between the branches at night. Slow growing, but very cool looking when the heads grow 2 or 3 mouthes and the body begins to close in around them to make new heads. IMO very easy to keep.

Almost forgot....
My system if anyone cares is a 46 gallon bowfront with a 10 gal refuge, 2 X 175 Watt 6500K MH, 2 X 110 Watt Acintic VHO. Automatic dosing topoff/Kalk. Yes, 12.5 watts per gallon....

That is a very nice piece. I have one that looks similar and appears healthy, but hasn't grown at all. What is your feeding regimen? Thanks.

Here is a shot of mine. This guy has grown from 11 heads 2 years ago to 34 heads now. Not the wild colors of hcs3's beauty, but it does have a nice light blue coloration overall. This is very dramatic in contrast of the flourescent green open brain it sits above in my tank.

Here's mine

It has split from 8 heads over a year ago to approximately 30something now. Not as intense of color as the other pictures, but nice nonetheless...

And I will vouch for the aggressiveness and the five inch sweepers that come out and frolic in the current....

i feed every so often. no exact schedule, just when i feel like it. i'd guess it's once a week or so. i feed the fish every day, usually twice, so i'm sure it's food from that as well. i feed fish roe most often to the corals, but also feed most any other fish food. i try to get each head with a small amount using a turkey baster. color morphs like mine are regular to see around here. just gotta watch for them.

I got mine a couple months ago from Mark (thanks again). Originally it had 14 heads but several have almost completed splitting into new ones. I only see the feeder tentacles at night and they extend only about 1". I have it about mid way down in the tank under VHO. I don't feed it directly.
