Livebearer stocking rules

Just curious really: If you stock your tank with livebearers, do you follow freshwater stocking rules? Or saltwater stocking rules? (The rules are arbitrary, but I think most people change them based off of fresh vs. salt). I know that in a 10 gallon tank, I could probably keep 6 guppies (2M:3F) in freshwater...but does the same apply for a 10 gallon saltwater tank? Same applies with mollies etc.

whenever I've done livebearers in any tank I've always done 1 male to 3 females to keep the pestering to a minimum, but that's just me. Plus, if you're going with mollies most of the time there won't be such a large visual difference between the two, like in guppies, that you'll miss having the extra male in there.
