Yes, the pellets help act as constant food source, the black paper keeps out the light, there's a 1.25"solid acrylic rod threw the center to create more surface area,

Well, okay then...
I like it. I have a canister filter that gets like that over time. Other than rinsing out mud from the bottom I leave it alone, since all the wormy dudes seem to be pretty happy. |

I used to get that when I don't change my GFO or GAC media. The available water region gets dense with them. Interesting idea to do it intentionally.
What effect do you think it has? I've got some theories...

I love worms myself. I think they're one of the keys to a thriving reef, but can't find consensus on why. Not all worms, but many.
I keep a 3" sand bed JUST for the worms! Well, the wrasses like it too. Just the sand avoids other inhabitants like aptasia. I'd love to figure out a sponge reactor too. I have 1/3 of my new tank design dedicated to a dark high flow zone to encourage this.

RC Cryptic Filtration discussion The man himself, Steve Tyree, discussing his concept on RC It's effectively the only mechanical filtration I have in my biocube besides a protein skimmer. I don't run filter pads or socks or any of that business, just high flow in the display, low flow in the rear chambers, and a big skimmer. I have plenty of (small) sponge growth and lots of fanworms in the tank cleaning the water. |

Just posted there.
I don't use mechanical filtration or protein skimming. I also don't export. I recycle everything.

I have a cbb butterfly in display, a raccoon butterfly in the sump, theres no chance of survival in either location for worms ect.
