one way chk valve..

Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with those 2 dollar check valves one finds in the pet section of Walmart.
I put one between my foam filter and air pump and noticed how slow the air flow turned out to be. The air stone was brand new as well as the air pump which is rated for a 100 gal. aquarium. (Mine's a 55 gal) and the air pump is running only the sponge filter.
Thanks in advance!
