Vortech Numbers for 350 Peninsula

Hey guys,

I am in the final stages of equipment purchases for a 350 gallon peninsula. I was wondering how many Vortech's people are running for this type of tank. I am planning to keep mainly SPS corals so I am looking for higher flow. I was thinking four MP40's and wanted to hear suggestions.

Tank Dimensions: 60L x 36W x 36H

Thanks!

While I have no experience with this type of setup, hopefully a bump will get you some insight.

Since it is a peninsula, are you planning on running all the Vortech's on one end? How thick is the glass/acrylic?

If it was my tank I would want my pumps to be at the end attached to the overflow that way they are not visible. I don't think 4 MP40s at the end would do the job. I would look into large pumps possible 1-2 of the larger GYREs or 2-3 MP60s or a Phanta Rhei ECM pump.

It would look much much better if you have the pumps attached to the overflow IMO.

I think you'd be better off with 2 MP60s than 4 MP40s. Since you can only keep pumps on one side, I would pony up for the MP60s. The more, the merrier.

I would think about two gyre's mounted vertically closer to the edge of the overflow wall on an alternating schedule to push flow to the end of the tank would work with 40's or 60's in between for broad flow.

Thanks for all the help guys. To answer some of the questions:

- Yes I want to keep the display tank clean looking. I wanted to place the pumps on the overflow (wall facing side) so nothing can be seen from the three viewing locations.

- Agreed, this is what I planned to do. I'm going to look into your alternative pump choices as well I have never heard of the Phanta Rhei.

Two gyres on either side of the overflow would work. I have two 230s set up like this & it's great!

I would wonder if MP40s could push water as far as you would need. 60s might be a better choice. Gyres may push water farther but get the newest version. Version 1 had a lot of issues from I've read

I was looked at the new Maxspect 280 gyre. I was thinking about possible getting two of them and having them mounted vertically (one of both sides of the tank).

Anybody have any positives/negatives or feedback with this option?

You want mp60's, not mp40's. I've got one on each end of my 6.5 footer. I don't think the 40's would push far enough.

The gyres are another option. I had one of the originals and am happier with the vortech, but maybe the new ones are better.

Hi,

I'm running a 1,260 L x 393 W x 314 H (3.2Mx 1M x 800) peninsula style reef.

In a shorter tank you might be able to push the volume from 1 end of the tank to the other and not have to put pumps onto the visible short end panel of your peninsula. It's going to be a test and see exercise because flow is unique to scaping designs per tank.

On my system I have 3 x MP60's on my short end overflow side panel and 3 x Tunze 6255 wide flow on my short end display panel which does obscure the view a little from that side, however I couldn't generate enough flow only from 1 side. The Tunze pumps appear smaller than the MP60's and that's why I chose them for that panel.

I would agree and deal with the expense of the MP60's and have the headroom to dial them up in power later as your reef grows and begins to obstruct the flow. Always nice to be able to ramp flow and create a storm cycle now and again to stir things up into the water column and let the skimmer pull it out.

The Panta Rhei might be your most economical option. Check them out and see if they would work for you. If you got two and put them next to your overflow, they would not be obtrusive. Otherwise, I agree that 2 MP60s would be better than 4 MP40s.

Thickness of the tank wall may well be your limiting/deciding factor. If I remember right, MP40s are only rated to 3/4". Don't know about Gyres.

- My tank is 3/4" thick so ya the MP40's might have an issue. I looked up the gyre280 and it's rated for over 1" so it should work just fine.

I have a 450 peninsula tank. It is 72*48*30.

I did not want cords everywhere and wanted good flow. I ended up with four sea swirls for random movement. On the overflow side I started off with 2 tunze 6255's but they were way to powerful so now with a gyre 280. I have great flow everywhere just need the tank to fill in som.

Depending on your rockwork mp40s or 60s on one end will push the water just fine.

There is also the ECM45 which is much cheaper at around $500 I believe.

mp40 works on 3/4" glass/acrylic just fine.
