Wrasse ID

I bought this fish for my 135 reef. The sticker said Leopard Wrasse but didn't say what kind. Can anyone help me out?

You should name it, "Superman Leopard Wrasse" because thats what it looks like. I've never seen that type before.

The pciture has way to much red tones - easy to see on the joints of the photo tank - so it is difficult to say without habing natural coloration.

Could be Macropharyngodon ornatus or the potters wrasse from hawai where my brain just does not find the coorect sientific name

It's the Chaoti wrasse. By the way very nice specimen.

I'm not sure if it is the Chaoti wrasse, unless as Peter points out the coloring in the picture is not the actual coloring. Check this website out and see if its one of these, Luvdemfishies is saying that yours is the 2nd one on the list http://www.wetwebmedia.com/macropharyngodon.htm

However, yours looks quite small, but the juv version of the Chaoti wrasse looks like this

It could also be a Halichoeres or "Christmas Wrasse"

Its a Leopard Wrasse...not sure of its exact species. How big is it? If it is small, it would be almost impossible to ID the exact species.

I think it is a color variation on the ornate leopard wrasse.

Never!
M.chaoti looks totally different. Neither male nor female coloration would fit with that.

Check Macropharyngodon choati pics

I agree with Peter about it being a Macropharyngodon ornatus .
It's not a Potters or Choats.

You should do some homework. That fish shouldn't be in a BB tank...

I did do my homework! It's in my Quarantine Tank for just a few days so I can get it eating, which it is. He will be moved to my 135 reef. And yes, the 135 has a sandbed. Thanks.

It can be kept in a BB tank as long as it has some area to bury in.

You can even do this in a Q-tank on a smaller scale.

It's an ornate leopard. Without sand it will stress out and die. I suggest placing a small container with sand like in the picture. This will be a temporary place for it to sleep. I even ask my suppliers to ship them with sand in the bottom of the bag. They seem to have a better survival rate.

glad to here it. I have had my female african leopard wrasse for over a year now. I actually had the male which is "impossible" to find. Unfortunatley he didn't make it through aclimation. I replaced him with a juvy from the cook islands though.
