pairing multiband pipefish can it be done:confused: ??

I have a 65 gallon tank with

2 oc clown fish
1 marine batta
1 oarnge spot blenny
1 male lyertail anthess

I have about 5lb rubble in sump to grow pods
salinity 1.024
temp 79

and I have tryed a pair of mulitband pipes but one died. so I tryed another and it died they never picked on each other as far as i could tell and it looked like they were going to pair up. It was so cool how they would swim parellel to each other in and out of the rocks. dose any one know if it can be done or how to sex these pipes???
