GIRS Feature Tank

Hi Everyone,

I know at one of the meetings we talked about how were were going to chose the person who's tank gets featured on the IRS' website. Post your ideas here on how you think we should do this. The last thing we want this to turn into is a popularity contest or have anyone feelings get hurt. We want this to be a learning experience. I have the information form all ready to go.

If there are multiple ideas or like ideas, we will combine them and post a poll and vote for the winning process.

Thanks!

How about you post the form somewhere so that anyone interested in being featured can fill it out. Then somehow randomly pick an entry from all of the entries.

People willing to be featured give their consent and information, featured tank randomly chosen from the group and not featured again until everyone consenting's been featured or until a certain time has passed, which would probably depend on how many people are willing to be featured. I think that'd be a decent method.

I like the popularity contest idea. The guy that gives away the most free frags during the tank tour wins.

LOL, there you go.

How about having different categories. SPS, LPS, Softies.

I say a random selection of members tanks with an opt out feature. Opt in rarely produces volume, but opt out allows more tanks to be included. I'd prefer to exclude no one, irrelevant of tank status.

PS, 5 page minimum explanation on why you want to opt out.

I'd go along with that, as long as you agree to be the one to drive around the state and take pics for everyone without digital cameras

I like the 'Opt Out' idea, but you could probably just randomly pick a member and inform them that it's their chance to be featured but it's not required.

I think that might be a little less hassle. As far as randomly picking a member.... you might just have to draw out of a hat or something.

So far....if I am reading all this right...it will go like this:

1). Start a thread title GIRS Featured Tank.
2). Everyone interested submit their names (within a certain time frame).
3). I take those names and randomly "draw from a hat".
4). E-mail the form to the person drawn to see if they are interested. This will take some commitment from that persons end as we need a lot of information from them and a lot of pictures to make this look good.
5). If that person denies...we go to the next person drawn.
6). Rinse, lather, repeat

Sound really good but we all have a chance to post pics of our tanks on the members page with description. I thought there was a member willing to take pics for the FEATURED TANK. I think in my opinion if they are still willing to do that it would look better if they are good at it. for example pics of my tank is on members page but it is not a very good pic. as for the draw from the hat Idea not a bad idea and that could be done at meetings so nobody can say it is "rigged" just to save face. member should only be able to be featured tank once every 6 or so months. Just my two cents. good quality pics will be more appealing for prospective new members. Lets make this look pro. the webpage looks great lets not bring the quality down.

Everything sounds good to me Bob.

Brad was the one willing to take the pictures. Every pic I've seen him post looks pretty good. Here's a pretty good example I think.

My only concern with Bob's summary is #2. If we allow people to opt in, we may get poor response. If we just randomly select from the member list, and then contact that person to see if they are interested, we may be more inclusive.

The only problem with that is you could be contacting 3-4 people or more before you find someone that wants to do it. Why not just pick from the ones you know want to do it.

Because people tend to be poor at volunteering. I'm looking for a way to bring more people out.

Great idea, but....
lets face it not everyone in the club has a great tank that people would want to display on the GIRS site. There does need to be some form of quality control/ minimal standards for posting. What that would be the group needs to decide.

The opt in allows for some amount of quality control, the opt out doesn't.

My tank is nice, but there are so many nicer tanks out there as well as less attractive tanks.

just my 2cents and of course I wasn't talking about any of your tanks....

As far as the picture taking goes, I am still up for it. However, it would be great if someone on the eastern side of the state stepped up to take photos there. Let's get the details ironed out so we can get started.

Should we just try it this way and see how many volunteers we get?

If we don't get any we will just pick from the members list and I will go through the process of contacting them to see if they are interested and if not move on to the next one until I get someone that is willing.

Whatever works. I just hope people don't look at their tank and think it's not worth featuring. They may have tried something new or different.

I say take volunteers first then if we don't get any then start picking and choosing.

I'll volunteer once I get my new lights. Hopefully in a couple months.

Agreed! I have yet to see a tank that I don't think should be featured! You might think it's crappy but to someone else it's probably pretty SWEET!

That's why I like the opt out with a 5 page explanation idea!
