Bacto ball question.

Ive just read on another thread that bio balls are a bad idea.I have these in the chamber prior to my fuge.(Copied a manufactured one) Is there any reason why there bad? Also what should I put in there place to stop detritus entering the fuge.

Ill try to draw my sump and see if anyone can let me know any floors in it.


| skimmer and floss | bacto balls | fuge |Return and phos remover|

Section one to two is over,two to three under, three to four over.
If there so bad creating nitrates what should I put in there place? Also why are companys producing em like that???
