Help cigarettes in tank
Any idea what damage can be caused in a 225g total system when two cigarettes were found in sump and fell apart when attempted removal? What chemicals are in there and what should I run to try to clean it up. I preformed a 50g water change so far. Thanks.

Unsmoked? I doubt the tobacco will do anything much different than macroalgae. Maybe the fish will enjoy it. The other chemicals are probably in too low of a concentration to hurt anything. Activated carbon might help remove some of them.

You're welcome.
Good luck and let us know if you notice anything. We should start to make a list of things that have landed in tanks: kool aid cigarettes pennies ice cream bleach razor blades screws magnets fans blue cheese I'm sure the list is a lot longer, but most of these were the past week alone.

Don't put a phone in your shirt pocket and bend over above the tank.

My tank and inhabitants were ALL victims of liquid dish soap! Do not ask why just know it was a total loss.

Id just run some fresh active carbon... Cigs have some PRETTY NASTY chems in them!
I think I found a small odd peice of plastic in my tank before... but I get freaked out if someone puts a coke can on my canopy... and they HEAR ABOUT IT!.. so MISC. un-reefsafe objects don't get in my tank without me knowing it!

Remove the cigarettes and add one nicotine patch a day for a week and the fish and corals should recover.

I dripped toothpaste into my tank once too. It was that baking soda toothpaste though, so I didn't worry about it too much.

Randy, or who may be available to answer this one.what would happen if wine were accidently spilled/droped into? the sugar would drop the nitrates, but what other effects? since vodka (NO3) doesnt seem to harm, just courious.

Depending on the amount, probably just a possible bacterial bloom, which may not even be noticed.
