Have you checked Walmart for Prestone Driveway Heat. Here in the Twin cities they carry 9lb container for $6 and some stores carry the 25lb bag for $7.83.

No local sources for the Mg portion. You will have to mailorder that from one of the links in the 2 part document.

Also, dowflake can be found here, depending on how far away from you it is:

Farrell Equipment & Supply in EauClaire WI carries 25lb and 50lb bags. Thier number is 715-835-4334.

But they do not sell to the general public. You need to be a contractor or business.

Walmart is likely to first place to look.

I also did notice the Home Depot near me ( Brooklyn Park ) had the 50lb bags of the Driveway heat for $16.97. They aren't located up at the front but on the isle where the fertilizers and stuff are located. I'm sure if this HD has it then many more do.

Nobody has found Magnesium that is known to be safe to use locally. You can get smaller portions from buckeye field supply ( sponsor here ) or find someone to split a 50lb bag from http://www.harveysalt.com/prod01.htm does end up cheaper per pound.

Are you located in the TC area, Duluth or Rochester areas ? all 3 have healthy reef clubs if your in the area. I can point you to the respective web sites if you wish.

My Lowes has driveway heat sitting in sealed pallets in the garden center. I guess because it hasn't snowed yet they are just letting it sit there.

We tried the lawn maint. route for the Mg.

The magnesium chloride they use is made by nasalts.com and we were not comfortable with trying it.....

No known local sources for the dead sea work manufactured. All the garden centers, hardware stores around here carry another brand of Mg they were are not comfortable with using.

Only known way is to mailorder from buckeye field supply or harveysalts.

Home depot said they could special order but would require a 9 pallet minimum each pallet has 48. You can ask hardware stores around there to see if you get the same kind of answers.

Home depot by me just got the MAG flakes in. Theyre outside by the gardening equipment, concrete mix etc, waiting for the cold weather. Maybe try calling your local HD.

I found MAG flakes at a local farm supply chain called Southern States (I don't know how widespread they are) here in the VA area.

Dowflake is also sold under the name "All-Clear" as calcium chloride for pools . . . so check local pool companies (I'll be doing that tomorrow as I'm having difficulty finding Dowflake also). I usually have a really hard time finding obscure items at Home Depot and Lowes (and it seems that >90% of employees are more clueless than I).

J.,
Are you venturing down to Richmond anytime soon? That's where I bought it a few months ago.

Rick, yeah I'll probably be in Richmond sooner than later. I was there yesterday (to pick up an engagement ring in Short Pump) and I drove right past Home Depot - we don't have one here - and wanted to stop, but I was in a rush to get back to work (though I did manage a stop in at Atlantis! Haha).

But I'll be trying the pool stores around here in the meantime. I need to find someone to take some of this MAG flake from me, a 50lb bag is huge (and I'm in an apartment).

Another place you may be able to find Dowflake is a pool supply store. As for Magflake, if you think it's tough to find the stuff up north, try finding it in Florida. I recently read that someone was able to get Magflake through a lawn treatment service. . .I believe it was Chemlawn.
