2001 Reef Tank of the Month
Staceon's Reef Tank

Below is
a description of Staceon's wonderful 54 gallon reef tank.
Whew.
What a long way that tank has come. The tank was started about 4 years
ago on tap water and LFS advice. It didn’t take long to see that trial
and error was not a means to achieve success. About that time I started
reading some books and little later stumbled upon the reef boards. The
one thing that I have discovered is that you learn quickly how little
you truly know. As others have mentioned before me, that tank would not
be here if it weren’t for the people of Reef Central. Once again thanks
everybody for being there when I had a question, needed someone to vent
to, or just talk to some of the only people around that would even understand
what we were talking about. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Last summer
I was having troubles with most of my SPS, but my ahermtypic corals where
doing well. It was at that point that I decided to dedicate the tank to
ahermatypic corals. Its been a challenge ever since.

Ok now
the numbers…
The
reef tank is a 54 gallon corner tank. There is about 120 pounds of live
rock. The sand bed is about 4 inches high with a variety of different
grain sizes. Lighting is 175 watt 10K MH run on a PFO ballast. There are
3 NO's as actinics. 4 maxijet 1200's are run on a Wavestrip. A 300 watt
ebo-jagger heater. A Mag 7 for return. I do not use a skimmer.

ATS from my home page.

Temperature
is maintained between 80 and 84 degrees. I feed a mixture of frozen Formula
I and II everyday. I feed about 4 to 5 cubes of Formula daily, all food
is soaked in Selcon. Two-thirds of the food is given between the hours
of 5:00 and 8:00 pm. The remaining 1/3 is fed just before the last actinic
goes off which is around 11:30. I dose 10ml of Marine DT's phytoplankton
almost every night with the last feeding, and sometimes another 10ml in
the morning. On the weekends I try to feed the tank an additional 1/3
of frozen around noon. Calcium levels are maintained with Kalkwasser(Mrs
Wages Pickling Lime). I drip in 1-2 gallons a day, once at night and the
other first thing in the morning if needed. Overflow is a Amirical type
hang-on. The hood is a DIY project I did. Most of the LPS and softies
have been with me for a few years. The non-phyto corals since summer of
2000. The clams around spring of 2000. 10 to 20 frags of xenia are cut
each month. The macros are pruned about once or twice a month.
I
use a small bag of carbon for a few days once or twice a month. I have
performed one water change(Dec 2000) since June of 2000, but would not
recommend this path unless your system is established. I do not plan on
doing any more water changes in the future, but I have been wrong before.

All
pictures here and my site were taken with a Krocera Yashica Micro Elite
3300 with 3.3 Mega Pixels and 2.0X optical zoom.
Thanks
