December 2001 Reef Tank of the Month

Bomber's Reef Tank

Look at this incredible tank that Bomber has assembled. Wow!

We are very pleased with the way this tank has evolved in the past three years. Considering that it started out as an experiment in creating our favorite Keys patch reef.

The Tank is custom glass free standing room divider (96X26X32) with a 100 gal sump in the cabinet below. The tank is more a peninsula than an island. All the equipment has to fit into the stand or the additional approx. 2ft square column adjacent to the wall.

How many other tanks have you seen that look this healthy?

Equipment: Lighting:
4 Dolphin SST on timers to create different random flow patterns. 4 110w VHO 03's URI
Bullet 3 Skimmer with Dolphin pump 4 110w VHO 50/50's URI
2 gravity fed 4ft CC air driven skimmers 3 175w 10k RedSea w/Spiders
Emperor 120w HO UV
1/2 HP Cyclone chiller

So you think you are looking at the same picture from above? Nope, this is the other side of the tank.

We do a complete water change with NSW at least once a month and the only chemicals we add are our homemade buffer (equivalent to Super Buffer) and Ca chloride. Those levels are kept at approx. 11.5 dKH and 460 ppm.

Originally the tank was dominated by Caribbean/TWA soft corals and anemones. As it's matured we've slowly changed it to where it is now distinctly hard corals and most Caribbean/TWA hard corals and sponges are represented.

It is refreshing to see a tank with corals that many of us have never kept or seen for that matter.

Being primarily a fish doctor, no reef tank would be complete without a fair representation of the local fauna.
