Looking Good JBANKS,
How do you like the ATI PM?
Thanks Chris! I'm loving I Bro. It's a very powerful fixture. It still amazes me at how quickly it can bleach out a coral if you're not careful with acclimation.

Here is my glasscages 36x37x18 rimless. I built the stand myself which was quite a project. Glad to join the rimless association! They did a great job.

If you guys had Lumenbrights and a powermodule to use on a rimless 48x30x18, which one would you use. I feel the PM is a cleaner and sleeker look, but I just love MH. The other thing is that i will be hard to add supplementation with the LBs. which I like to have.
BTW I'll be joining the club this weekend

I prefer MH too and use a LB pendant.
I supplement with LEDs. Mounted behind the LB using marine grade velcro is an actinic Ecoxotic Stunner strip. And I hung a track lighting rail (from Lowes) to mount PAR38 LED spots - 2 Sunbrite actinics and 2 Nanotuners 12K.

nice tank. what bulb combo are you using??
Sorry for the late response....
My bulb combo is 8 ATI Blue +, 2 KZ Fiji Purple, and 2 Aquascience 15k. It is ridiculous, I just can't get the pictures to depict it properly. My tank looks "neon" for lack of a better term - The intensity of the flourescence and actinic pop is off the charts.

Who are the best rimless manufacturers/distributors? I live in northern New Jersey and am looking for a tank for my first saltwater setup. I might just end up going with a 40g breeder because all the rimless tanks I've looked at are pretty pricey.

I am getting my 90gal rimless set up now...
Just curious, what fish are you guys successfully keeping in your tanks WITHOUT using netting, eggcrate, etc? Which fish are NOT jumpers?
Thanks,
96gts
08/03/2010, 02:54 PM
I think it's possible for most fish to jump. I have even heard angel, tang, clown jumped, I think wrasse, goby and jawfish are probably the worst. I think fish like cardinal, clown, angel and tang have less chance to jump.
jkf1983
08/03/2010, 03:06 PM
I have a yellow tang, one spot fox face, true perc clown, and chromis. So far only lost 1 chromis... jumping is an issue though definitely limits your choices... I would probably stay away from wrasses, gobies, fire fish, jawfish etc because they are usually jumpers. BRS sells netting now that you can put in a screen frame, but it kinda kills the look of the rimless tank in my opinion.

Thanks. The colors don't look nearly as great in the pictures as it looks in person. This is the reason I love T5s, the flexibility to tweak colors just how you want them. I have not seen many tanks with more actinic pop than I have.
The coral in the far corner is a big leather, one with which I have had good success getting clownfish to host in. It is easily more than a foot tall and a foot across now.

No! Your tank will fall apart! Rimless tanks are made of thicker glass so the seams will stay together. Mine is 3/4 inch glass.

What bulb combo are you running to get this nice pop on the yellows/greens and reds?
I got an ATI 6x54 fixture with
3 ATI Blue Plus
1 UVL Super Actinic
1 UVL Actinic white (75% actinic- 25% 10k)
1 Fiji Purple
What changes would I have to do to get similar colors? I had in mind to get rid of the UVL super actinic and add an extra ATI Blue Plus since I think the UVL Super Actinic is very dim.

My tank is still a baby, was setup with dry rock so its taking its sweet time.

My bulb combo is 8 ATI Blue+, 2 Fiji Purple, and 2 Aquascience 15k. I run them in 3 separate groups of 4 bulbs.
Set One consists of 2 Blue+ and 2 AS 15k
Set Two consists of 2 Blue+ and 2 Fiji Purple
Set Three is 4 ATI Blue+
My favorite combo is running set 2 and 3, so 6 Blue+ and 2 Fiji Purple. The color is amazing in person. The actinic pop of the flourescing corals especially the pop of the oranges/reds is very vibrant.
I tried a few of the GE 6500k and ATI Aquablue Special in the past, but found that the AS 15k delivered a more crisp color and quite a bit of actinic pop for not being an actinic bulb per say. This in my opinion is one of the most underrated bulbs out there.

Sorry for jumping in but IMO, I'd lose the Super Actinic and replace it with a GE 6k. I know how this sounds but it works. Are you sure you have an actinic white? If its how you descride (75% actinic- 25% 10k) it sounds like a UVL 75/25. At any rate, ditch the actinic and replace it w/ a GE for reds and yellows.

I love my ATI PM, but the fact that you're able to run your Sfiligoi Stealth 12in three different sequences is quite amazing.. plus you get two extra bulbs.. Very Nice and I agree, nothing gives you the beautiful color of Blue + and KZ Fiji purples together. I end up ging with a UVL antinic White as a replacement due to the Fiji being out of stock and I really miss it! A must see in person!

I don't remember how the 8 bulb PM was wired so I'm not sure what you have in terms of switches. When I had an 8 bulb fixture I always had a group of 4 that had 3 Blue+ with 1 Fiji Purple. I'd take the other 4 and 3 Blue+ and a GE 6500K. This is a good recipe for growth and aesthetics, but if you want more actinic pop and flourescing, swap the GE 6500k for a AS 15k. I wouldn't run just the Blue+ and FP alone, in my opinion the corals benefit from a little more of a full spectrum than that combo offers.
In regards to the GE 6500k, I am a big fan of this bulb and I used to run a GE 6500k in place of one of the Fiji Purples. When combined with the high number of Blue+ bulbs, I feel that they have a similar effect - although stand alone the FP is more red and the GE more yellow. The only difference I noticed was that FP gives a little more pop to reds/warm colors. The GE 6500k really enhances yellows, which helps pinks, reds, and greens, but doesn't 'pop'.
I'll see if I can take more pictures, but I just can't get my camera to capture the colors as accurately as they appear in person. Anybody who lives in the Chicagoland area or is visiting the area is more than welcome to come by and check out my system first hand.

OK, here are some updated pictures. The old aquascape was really bugging me, especially the larger island viewed from one side of the tank. I have lowered the larger island and built it in a more diagonal structure with an overhang on which I have placed the green staghorn. The smaller island has been left unchanged and I have added a couple of more SPS colonies. It is not easy aquascaping a structure viewable from all sides because each time you get one side right, there is something wrong with it on the other side. Anyway, I am finally happy with it and hope you like it.

You hardly notice the yellow of the 6500k when you have it paired with so many Blue+ bulbs, that's why I liked it. When you put it next to any bulb around 10-12k, it's tough to tell the difference, hence my jump to the AS 15k to actually see a difference.
That being said, your second combo would definitely be the one I'd choose. If you're switches are 2 and 7 for dusk/dawn - I would try this:
1 Blue+
2 Blue+
3 FP
4 Blue+
5 KZ New Gen, Aquascience, GE - whatever you choose for daylight spectrum
6 Blue +
7 Fiji Purple
8 Blue +
You just don't want to lead with a FP bulb up front in any combination that might be on by itself, always put it behind a Blue+. You may also want to just ditch the Fiji Purple in slot 7 and leave it a Blue+ as well - I'd buy an extra bulb and have it available to try out when you set it up.

Thanks bud, I'll probably go with this. You think one fiji purple will be sufficient...just use a blue+ in the 7th slot? I'll blue an extra bulb just in case.

I am planning a DIY rimless ~10 gallon acrylic tank w/ External Overflow. I used an online calculator for thickness, and it said I need at least .290" acrylic to do rimless. So 3/8" acrylic is what I am planning. The plan is 14x14x13. Does 3/8" sound reasonable to you guys? Does anyone have a tank with similar specs? I looked through 50+ pages of this thread and didn't see anything too similar.

what moonlights are you guys using on your rimless tanks? I really wish I could find a nice, clip on blue LED light. All of the other moonlight options seem to be best suited for mounting in a canopy (which of course I don't have). And the disco-ball solana light doesn't seem to be the best suited for mounting these either.

i have a 90 gal rimless tank my problem is that my water level is about quarter
inch from the top, how do i lower it some, i have durso i have raise it and lower it but don't work, Any suggestions?
mudskipper1
11/04/2010, 10:21 PM
Is the durso inside and overflow box? if so, you would have to lower the level of the teeth(if toothed) on the overflow, which can be accomplished with a dremel or router. Lowering the flow through the overflow would help a little bit as well.
boxer385
11/04/2010, 10:28 PM
the durso is inside the overflow box, so you recommend that i lower the tooth
on the overflow?
GQuinn

Can you get a picture of your existing overflow box showing the water level and the teeth. Sometimes the teeth are to narrow and need to be widen or lowered (as mudskipper1 suggested)

The glass-holes overflow wasn't an option per say, I planned on using it from the beginning to keep from using the real-estate inside the tank with an overflow - I simply told Miracles where and what size hole to put in for it. I actually wanted to have an horizontal external overflow on the back of the tank, but I didn't enough room behind the tank and the cost was much greater than if I went with glass holes. I'm happy I did.

I did the same thing with my Miracles tank (which is still being constructed). The original overflow that I wanted was GARGANTUAN. I stumbled upon the glass-holes overflow and I can't wait to see the result.

Be prepared to rip the blue vinyl off and redo it. The clamps that they use wrinkle the **** out of the vinyl and you'll see air pockets when viewing from the front.
I had to completely redo mine. They should put the vinyl on LAST but they don't...

I was suprised they sent it to me like that. One of the corners was so bad they cut the damaged area out and put a vinyl patch on top. Now from the front you could see the seam as the air is impossible to get out.
Really dissapointed they did that.
You cannot smooth it out...you have to rip it off and start over.

Yes the original was something like 12x6 but I wanted to have a beananimal drain which made it something crazy like 20x6. I am very happy I went the the glass-holes because I will lose zero space in my footprint.
Centered or corner depends on personal preference and location in the room. Will people be viewing from the side that will house the corner overflow?

How's the noise on the glass-holes overflow? I really like the size but am leaning toward a full-height center overflow with two drains for a herbie system. I don't want the noise or the air bubbles in the sump.

I'll let you know when I have the tank running. I hear the glass-holes overflows are pretty quite once they are tuned in. Going with a full height overflow could be more quiet but I'm not sure. The room that this will be going in has a lot of irregular surfaces that should suck up noise pretty well, so I'm not terribly concerned.

This thread is really terrific, it has helped me hone in on my new tank a lot. I am going to join the club - simple as that. I would like some advice (all opinions welcome) on what I'm considering:
Dimensions 48x24x20 or 48x22x20 Starphire Rimless
I have gravitated to the Elos 120 for two reasons:
1. It is beautiful design, super clean, and the right size for me.
2. Elos provides the entire system (my tank experience is very limited having just bought a 29g biocube 3 months ago).
Downside is cost, so I'm considering a few options:
a. Elos 120 tank, either buying the Elos cabinet or finding one locally, buying my own sump, skimmer, et al.
b. Miracles/AGE tank with the same dimensions, pre-cub holes, and a cabinet, sump, skimmer, separately.
I'm not considering building the tank or the cabinet myself; I'm interested in best of breed; but I also don't want to overpay.
Has anyone gone down this route and bought an Elos 120 w/a different cabinet, sump, skimmer, etc? How much work was it?
Has anyone gone down the Miracles/AGE route and had a tank designed that mimics the Elos tank style (internal corner overflow/return system)? How do I spec out the holes required (one overflow, two return?) and sizes, the right location, etc?
I see a lot of different T5 lighting options, 6, 8, 10 lights, different wattage, these Stealth systems, etc. Is there a definitive comparison guide somewhere that I can refer to that allows me to get a better feel for what would be right for my tank (it'll be mixed LPS/SPS/A few Fish).
And last question (for now!), has anyone had a lot of experience trying to find cabinets that were solid enough to hold the tank/water, and the sump, that weren't build by these aquarium companies, or is that just a useless line of thinking on my part?
Thanks,
Shane

I have a 120 gal rimless starphire (48x24x24) glasscages tank and the starphire is definitely worth the extra money IMO... Miracles makes a great tank too and I think their edges are beveled. Either route you take I would highly recommend the floating overflow box, it takes up much less room in the tank. Also you will have to think about what type of over flow system you're going to use, durso, siphon, etc.... I have a siphon overflow which I am very happy with because its dead silent. But I needed 3 holes drilled, not the std two holes. One for the siphon drain (has a gate valve to match the return flow rate), one for the emergency drain and one for the return.
As for lighting, I am using an 8 bulb 48" powermodule and am very happy with it!
Another thing to consider which I didn't even think about is some fish are not going to be good in a rimless tank because they're known for jumping and will carpet surf. Such as wrasses and jawfish. So just a heads up. Good luck!
If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

The Elos route is a good way to go if you want an all-in-one like solution, but keep in mind it doesn't include tons of other support equipment that you will find that you need. For example, heaters, calc reactors, other reactors, RO/DI, powerheads, etc, etc. It just simplifies the plumbing, sump, tank, and stand decisions. The bottom line is that you'll need more stuff, a lot more stuff, that isn't included out of the box with Elos - and quite frankly, you can buy better equipment for equal or less money if you do things separately.
As far as overflows go, I'll never own another tank with an internal overflow, whether it is a corner or even the small glass holes one that I have. If you have the space and cost isn't that big of a deal, get an external horizontal overflow so there is NOTHING visible inside the tank. Acrylic overflows also get covered in coralline and just show their age over time.
Also, be careful about putting AGE tanks in the category with Miracles, you'll find out why when you get the quote. $$$$
Stands are an interesting animal in this hobby, there aren't too many off the shelf type solutions, most people will have them custom built to match unique tank sizes and home decor style. Using another type of furnture as a tank stand is ok with small tanks, but probably not advisable for larger ones.
With lighting, you'll find that people swear by each and every type of light out there. You have to decide what look you like and what is important to you, and then come to a solution on your own. I can help you along with that should you need it, but I think it's something to discuss outside this thread.

Been running for 3 weeks now without lights. Will be going ZeoVit on this tank and will add the zeo reactor next week along with the basic 4. Still need to add the two vortech's and program them to my WXM module.

Texsun, I used cable covers and zip ties. From the picture, you can see where I used zip ties on the rail towards the back. Then the light rack was black so it is easy to conceal the zip ties. :)

48" x 18"x 10". I purchased it from a local reefer. The best I can tell is it's a glasscages build with glass overflow. Here is how it looked July 5th 2010.

Interested in seeing which one is typically more expensive? I'm getting quotes at the moment.

Make sure to get a quote from Reef Savvy. I was going to get an Elos until I got a quote from Reef Savvy. I had them build me the tank and custom sump and I built the stand myself.

that's a beauty logzor. an mp60 is going to blow the fins off your fish in that size tank!! :) good dimension choice - 48" will give you plenty of lighting options and 30" of depth is going to make all the difference for aquascaping.
How did you find the build quality of Miracles?

Yeah I'm really curious to see what happen with the MP60! Hopefully I can run it such that I won't need any other powerheads. I think it only ends up being 50x turnover, I usually run higher than that. Perhaps it will have wide enough flow that I can get away with just the MP60.
Regarding the build quality, I really don't have a lot to compare it to but I think the build quality is superb. Everything looks fantastic. I'll be able to tell better when the tank is up and running with water/lights.

I changed my mind on overflows after the holes were already drilled. I decided to go with glass-holes overflow because there is no footprint in my tank, just on the back glass.
I was going to put in a 2 drain/1 emergency drain overflow (can't think of the name at the moment) but it was going to be gigantic so I nixed it.
I am VERY glad I went with glass-holes it will give me a ton more room to work with.
Perhaps in the future they will be used for a closed loop or something. For now they will be plugged. On a side note, do the plugs screw all the way into the bulkheads? I can't seem to screw them in very far at all....notice in the pictures how far they still stick up.

Personally since I have an MP-40 in my 46 gallon and still have less flow on the opposite side of the tank I think you should have went with 2 Mp-40 then 1 MP-60. You will have much less flow on the other side. Nice looking tank anyway.

I was wondering if any one had there light sitting on top of there rimless with the legs that some with the light. or is it dangerous to put the extra stress on rimless.
Thanks

Steve,
No, I don't have a build thread. I'm pleased with the way the tank turned out. They drilled the wrong size holes for my return line bulkheads (1" instead of 3/4"), but I was able to find 3/4" bulkheads that would work with the larger hole. That's really the only complaint I have with Miracles...well Derek isn't too good with returning emails, but...
Quality of the tank is really good.
The Lights, I like a lot. The PM is really nice and I'm glad I went with it over the sunpower just for aesthetics.

I believe there is an equation they do to determine if the tank will be stable. Every quote that I have ever had used 1/2" glass for a 20" tank and 3/4" for a 24" tank. I think you will be perfectly fine with 1/2" glass on a 20" tank.

Thank you, I am using a single AI Sol Blue for lighting, it is 12.5" from the water line. Yes those are smoked glass doors and the water line is 3/4" from the rim. if i built a 8ftx2ftx15"
do think i could do it rimless if i used 3/4" glass for the sides? or do you think i could get away with 1/2?

Yes you are correct but I figured it would be really cool to have an MP60. LOL
I've give an update how this ends up working out..
Can't wait to see some updated pics of your tank Logzor.
Especially interested in all the equipment you've bought to run this tank.
I've never set one up from a custom build, last tank I had was a Current USA Solana tank, so it was all built in etc...I'd like to see what it takes to get one of these bigger bad boys running.
Great start so far.

I like it quite a bit. It's easy to light, easy to work in, and I really enjoy viewing it from above. There's about 13 1/2" of water or so in there, after sand + clearance at the top.

Eastcoaster1,
Thanks! The inner frame work of the stand is made from 3/4" x 4" strips of plywood that is lined with white plastic laminate. The beige color material on the outside is Formica plastic laminate #7747-58 Pencil Wood. The black trim is 1x4 poplar painted satin black. I have had stained and painted stands in the past and wanted to try a plastic laminate stand. The salt creep on the stained and painted stands was a pain to keep clean. I figure this time with the laminate it will be alot easier.

These are some beautiful tanks...! I think I've read the whole thread now (!) and although some of my questions about stocking have been addressed, I havent' seen anything on keeping motile invertebrates in a rimless tank. Is their 'motility' more of an issue in a rimless than in other types of tanks? :spin1: I don't see many shrimp/snails/etc. in the pictures, but they may be hidden (or busy working)...you know how they are!
I'm very tempted by a rimless as I love the look and the pendant lighting options. Thanks for some great pics and reading!

I don't know what the oldest is on here, but I know a guy here in South Florida that has had an Elos for more than 7 or 8 years. I think it has been that long since he got it, but I'm not 100% sure. I know the tank I have, I expect to last a long time. It's 20" x 20" x 18" and it is .5" glass, made by Reef Savvy. I don't know of any tanks that small using .5" glass. I don't know for sure if using the .5" glass will make it stronger, but common sense tells me that the extra contact area for the silicone should make it stronger, but science and physics can be in complete opposition to common sense, and I've learned plenty of things in physics and science classes in the past that made me think, "How is that possible? It doesn't make sense. That goes against logic and everything I've ever learned."

Just picked my GlassCages 60 cube rimless up today. It has starfire on front and sides, and rear overflow. Very happy with the construction. Kinda worried after reading some bad post about them. The tank is gonna be mainly SPS. I have a 20 gal DIY sump, with precision marine redline 100 skimmer. Looking into Avast or Geo Calcium reactor. Already have pfo 250 de 15k xm mh for it. Gonna be running zeovit. I have to tear down my solana when I get the house tented and then set up the 60 with the inhabitant after. Will post pics as soon as possible. Also have a DIY stand in progress. Anyone use neoprene as padding under tank, and if so how thick do you think.

I got out of the hobby about a year ago, as I had a new born son and my photography hobby was escalating to more than a hobby, I couldn't handle all 3 so aquariums was the one that got the boot...but I promised to be back one day.
And I will...the promise holds true.
I'm still not ready to come back with the tank I want, so I'm just lurking and studying the different tanks that are coming up, and keeping up with the new technologies that arise in the time I'm out of the hobby.
I will go rimless again, I had a 34g Solana tank and thats what I sold when I got out of the hobby. I want to go bigger this time, 150g + and rimless with sump/refug etc...stuff I didn't really have last time around.
My motto this time is Go Big or Go Home. Well, not TOO big...lol...I'll save the real BIG for the Public Aquariums.
So looking at the rimless tanks via photos on here, my favorite aquarium manufacturers are AGE, ELOS, and Miracles...ELOS being a top of the line favorite, AGE being another top of the line but more affordable option, and Miracles being the most affordable option. Granted, all these are expensive options in the sizes I'm wanting, but all good quality too.
So please don't mind me lurking and throwing out questions here and there to you all!
I will have a tank on here eventually...

Thanks! My husband made the stand using the template found here on RC threads - Yes, Bead board doors - I painted the stand to match the only painted wall in our guest room -- Other 3 walls are logs/windows. Went with turquoise to go with our "caribbean souvenirs and photos" (Im a travel agent).

Don't mind the donuts in the tank. Im waiting on some corals and found the donuts are a good way to be able to move them around if they don't like the LEDs. I'm also putting a background behind the tank. Its a 1/16" piece of acrylic with a cling on background I made using the gradient colors from the wall but with a scene that will give it some dimension (I also am a graphic design). Im not sure if I will screw the sheet onto the wall or maybe make a light box for it. Got the acrylic today, waiting on the printed vinyl cling on. The good thing is if I don't like the cling on, I can just design another and put it on the acrylic.

Most shops in asia use 12mm glass for 48X24X24" rimless tanks. If less then 24" high definately no problems.
A local glass tank builder told be with 1/2" glass and a 24" height at a 48" length will most like seperate the silicon on the seams... i'm wondering if this is true? i'm going to get a 20" tall done with the dimensions 48"x24"x20" with 1/2" glass... should i worry? i'm not worried about his quality but worried about the fact that he is right on a 24" height and he was iffy about the 20" height.. but i see so many of you with 24" rimless tanks so i'm wondering are they using thicker glass to prevent bowing?? also whats the longest anyone has had a tank with 24" height and a 48" length? i'm looking for experienced answers not guesses from someone thats never had a rimless of that size or larger..

That's awesome. How much do you clean your glass? And how do you get the outside so clean

Not that very nice! Looks like you have your water level right to the top?

I am having a 96L x 20w x 18H being made as I write this.
The tank is rimless and the glass is 1/2" thick. No euro bracing at all.
What do you guys think?
Anyone?

Thats because the water flows over the top and flows down over the sides to the reservoir.

Anyone?
It sounds like its going to be an awesome time aquascaping.
Not even a lower brace around the bottom edge on the inside?

Thanks - no the builder of the tank said it wasn't necessary?
I just wanted to get everyone's thought on this to avoid a tank break once it is filled. I really trust this builder but a few people have questioned the the glass size so I thought I should ask?

Wow, will you have some center bracing at least? Being 96L I would think you'd need at least one center bracing to avoiding bowing or stress at the center of the tank.

Apparently not needed?

Looks great. what are the tank's dimensions, and what MaxSpect unit are you using?

I shut off the main pump every couple days and then just clean the outside with a soft pad. Takes maybe five minutes. I clean the inside daily with a soft pad. As long as I stay on top of it, it only takes a few minutes a day. That's awesome. How much do you clean your glass? And how do you get the outside so clean

It goes over the edge into a gutter which surrounds the tank and then down into the sump.
Here's some pics of the gutter and the flow over. Have to watch out for runaway snails though. :strange: Not that very nice! Looks like you have your water level right to the top?

I'm just starting to work through this thread from the start. Any good ideas on how to keep the fish in the rimless tanks.

I love the rimless tanks. You must have to have that zero edge spot on level. Was it difficult to get an even flow over all of the sides?

I had my own stand built with leveling feet. Took about 15 minutes to get it spot on.
I think a big part of the reason these tanks have a bad rep is that the manufacturer does a very poor job of giving advice on how to set up and maintain them. THey are great tanks and not any more time consuming than any other comparable sized tank once you have them set up right. But it took me about a year to solve all the problems I had with it and the company wasn't much help.I love the rimless tanks. You must have to have that zero edge spot on level. Was it difficult to get an even flow over all of the sides?
Enjoy
