i did a search and didn't come up with a good solution.

i have a spotted cardinal that i believe has mouth rot. it started with two little white spots on the tip of his/her mouth and then slowly started to expand and its not fluffy and parts of it is missing.

it is in a QT right now being treated with two other fishs i recently bought. water quality is all good. they are in a 20 gallon long being treated now with Prazipro and Cupramine (first dosage).

i have paraguard on hand, but nothing else. does anyone know if i can use paraguard for the treatment of the mouth rot. i dont have another tank to put him in, so if anyone can offer any good advice, it would be great.

i can however, take him/her out and put him/her in a container but do daily water changes to help with water quality and treat him/her with paraguard. will that be an okay idea.

any help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about your cardinal. If it is indeed Pseudomonas causing the rot a broad spectrum antibiotic like tetracycline or doxycycline should treat it. Try a google search for "fish doxycycline" for some sources...

good luck, keep us posted.

well, i didn't have any of the med jacob stated, but it appears that paraguard might do the trick.

i put the cardinal in a small tank and pulled a small piece of the sponge from the main QT. i added paraguard based on the instructions of the bottle.

the fish does not seem stressed at all. just floating there like cardinals do. he does move his mouth once in a while, but its too soon to tell. i think a two-three week treatment should be good.

FYI, i pulled the water from the QT which had prazipro and cupramine in it. i removed the cupramine with cuprisorb, but he prozipro i believe is still in the water. so, it appears that its possible to treat with prozipro and paraguard together. dont quote me on that though.

a quick update, the spotted cardinals lip seems to be doing better after one day. seems strange that so much could change in a day. the lip is no longer fuzzy white, its back to the normals gray/dark color.

i did not feed him today, but hopefully i will try tomorrow. he does still move his mouth once in a while. i think paraguard is working for the mouth rot. i'll keep up the daily updates for those interested.
