View Full Version : Trying to hang a light fixture on a thin fish tank

I am trying to hang a kessil light fixture(a360we) on a 5mm(ADA) fish tank; however the glass is way too thin to hang anything. I am afraid I may break the glass.
I have about 3" on each side to put something there to hang the light fixture. What is the best way to do it? I thought about making diy pvc light hanger, but the look was very disturbing in my living room. I want something very sleek and simple.
Any suggestions?

You could easily make that using conduit and a bender and some paint from Home Depot. Then return the bender

I like buying and returning stuff after using it!
I did that when I drilled my tank lol

I hung my kessil from the ceiling with fishing line. Just screw one of the little ceiling hooks and run the line through the openings on the side of the kessil. Works like a charm and looks like it is just floating there.

I have a gooseneck but the glass is too thin to mount anything. it literally bends the glass because of the weight of the light.
If I can hang it from the ceiling, that will be ideal but my ceiling is like over 13-14feet tall. cannot mount anything =(
I will try that aluminum. That seems pretty good.

If you are going to hang it I would at least use stainless steel leader for fishing. The black coated copper crimps would look clean and also hold up well. All you would need for the install would be $10 and a pair of needle nose pliers.
Any tackle shop and most rite aid/cvs carry it.

If you don't want to hang it you could get thin aluminum 1 inch wide flat bar or paint mild steel from Home Depot. Make a 90 degree bend at 6" and put the 6" end under the tank. Let the other end go up the back of your tank to the desired height you want your light and then make another 90 degree bend that will go over your tank to support the light. That order was for placement only, I wouldn't make any bends while in contact with the tank.
If you didn't want it to go under the tank you could forego that 90 degree bend and drill it to the back of your stand.

I am just curious why you cannot mount anything. (I know nothing about DIY so maybe it is obvious). Is it because you don't have a ladder?
Anyways here is what I was talking about with the fishing line :) Wish I didn't have to cover, but have an eel.

Well, if you think heights don't matter, then yes anything can be mounted or hung, but my ceiling is so high that i feel like it is stupid to hang something that high and not being able to adjust or having such long wires from the ceiling. it has to be at least 10 feet long from the ceiling to reach my tank. would you do that?
compare to my ceiling height, yours like 1/4 or 1/3, that i don't mind hanging my lights..

No worries I was just curious. I am lazy so don't plan on adjusting much so yes I would, but you are different, it's all good :)
Mine is just supplemental as you can see, so adjusting a lot was never a big issue. I was just curious if there was some glaring reason I did not get. (no wires needed though, just the fishing line)

Good luck with your issue, I love my kessil since I added it. Great shimmer

Reflector hangers are the best ways to suspend fixtures from the ceiling. You adjust the tension to the fixtures weight so you can raise and lower the light with a slight touch. You can lower the light right above the tank then raise it out of the way for accessing aquarium.

For the 29 gallon I just bought I want the shimmer of the mh but worry about the temp drop when the light goes out and the heater tries to catch up.
Do other led lights have shimmer?

I cannot speak for other brands but I have used radions and kesills. They do have shimmer effect very nice. Very realistic like the ocean. Kesill is well known for their shimmer effect. Personally, I like T5s better. Not a big fan of shimmer and shadow.

You didn't care for the radions huh? I'm looking at the radions and Zetlights right now. I think the kessils have obnoxiously excessive amounts of shimmer. I spent a month diving the Cayman Islands and never saw that much shimmer.

Radions good but I thought it was just too fancy. I like simplicity.
I agree with you. Kesill gives you too much shimmer and thats why I want to switch it back to ATI T5. If you have money to spend, go with radions.

When I do side jobs I get play money but it isn't all the time. There is just nothing better to me that a perfectly lit tank and with passing clouds and lightning storms my bride can get a bit more involved in the tank as well.

I myself love the vertex light, although I have a radion pro on my frag / qt
