Hi guys I'm thinking of using seachem prime in my Reef tank but I just need to know do I need to have a skimmer to use this stuff?
I only have an external filter.
Thanks

I do not believe so, what is the reason you want to use this product?

prime is the wrong product for that.
Prime is used to condition tap water for emergency use(dechlorinator), or to bind ammonia so it's not toxic.
It will not reduce your nitrates.

Per their marketing material....
Prime® also contains a binder which renders ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate non-toxic..
Some info here..
http://www.seachem.com/support/forums/forum/general-discussion/1803-prime-questions
They state that prime will "bind" nitrates (and nitrites and ammonia) for 24-48 hours...
BUT the problem is that after that time it releases the nitrates right back into the water..
I agree its NOT the proper product to use to reduce nitrate levels or to export it.
Carbon dosing (vinegar/vodka,etc..) would be a better choice.
That provides "fuel" for the bacteria to increase their numbers to allow more nitrates to be "removed".. That along with skimming to remove that bacteria/nitrates is a much better way to go..
Of course plain old water changes will work just as well depending on the real issue/nitrate levels,etc...
A 50% water change should reduce nitrate levels by ~50%..
