Would ladies nylons work as a filter sock ?

Probably, but I recommend not doing it. Sometimes they can have dyes or other chemicals that leech out into the water. I've seen this firsthand during my own freshwater circulation testing. You could maybe test it in a bucket of water change water or something, but for all you know it's releasing a poison that you can't see, detect or test for. Not worth the chance in my opinion.

hummmmm......I have seen them used by painters to strain paint.
Filter socks are like 100 microns. I know there are designs for plankton nets using nylons. Would that make them ~ 50 microns or so?
Anyone know what the typical mesh size of nylon stocking?
How does the 40-75 gauge (knitting loops per 1.5 sq in) translate to Microns?

Some manufactures add silicone to "...give a silky feel.." to the nylon. If you are going to use them, the white to tan are likely to have the least dye. The more sheer translate to smaller thread size; the weaker the nylon.

My wife can sew anything, so I would be assured a lifetime supply of filter socks and carbon bags if this fabric was acceptable.
If the socks were changed weekly, and carbon bags monthly, is that really enough time to leech anything bad into the water?

cool link tanky, it would be easy to buy fabric of a certain micron mesh and go from there, without any worry of chemical leeching.

They are very cheap and deliver right away. I think they are 1.85 each.

IMO a 20 or 25 micron filter works better although needs replacement more often.

anybody want to take a stab at the micron value of pantyhose?
usually I have to pay $6.99/minute to ask a question like that.

As they are so expansive, I would not think they would make great filters. And i meant expansive.

Good point landragon. I did a simple test with a return pump and noticed that the flow was considerably cut down, which is why I was guessing they were smaller than 100 microns.
I tested with what I will use for a sump someday, 20H, a mag9.5 and my seaswirl, zip-tying the hose around the hose (!) and let me tell you, that tank was spotless in minutes, even if the flow was much less than without the 'sock'

They are certainly less than 100 microns. I would guess about 15 . I tried using them in the past to create replacement bags for my pond vac to no avail. They clog like crazy and stretch under the weight of debris. I had a couple come off their housings due to this and spew their contents in to the pond. Very nasty indeed.

Or you can do that. You can also buy the 20 and 100 micron felt from coralife and sew it up.
