JB how often to your corals encrust into each other and how do you prevent this?

First let me say that your tank is amazing. Now I plan on starting a new tank in the New Year 2006 yea. My question’s to you are. What is the minimum amount of light as far as watts goes to light my tank? I will be keeping a S.P.S. dominated tank. Now my problem is that with the high cost of electric theses days (around 20.5cents a kilowatt) what would something like this run? Is there any way you could show me how to break down the cost so that I will be able to keep the tank going after it has been set up. Also I hope this is not to personal but what does it cost you to run your tank for electric a month. I see that we do not to live far from each other and I would love to come by sometime and pick up some frags when my tank is up and running of course if you have some for sale and not mind company. Thanks so much for the help as I fear that the cost of high electric is not going to allow me to handle a reef tank. Your thoughts and suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I think that is it for the elecrtic
I know there is so many was to go with this equipment but like I said this is just a basic set up.

Depeneds how far they are. I would say that 40% of them willl encrust every 4-6 weeks unless I frag them. The rest have enough room to grow for a while until this becomes a problem.

There is nothing yu can do to prevent this other than frag. That's why I tell people to leave at a minimum of 4-6" between frags when the place them in the tank.

Watts has almost nothing to do with keeping acropora, its all about PAR. The reason some people needs to use 175watt MH and others 250, and 400 has to do with the amount of PAR they are getting. Is you use dim lamps like 20K you need more wattage, use 10K lamps and you can mostly get a way with less wattage. If it were my tank I would go with 2 250-watt XM10K lamps with electronic ballasts. If you want bluer go with AC14K or Phoenix14K those are DE. If you want radium or XM20K go with 400 watts.

My tank cost me about $140 a month to run with electricity.

I use a kalk reactor in addition to the calcium reactor.

As far as additives I use iodine and amino acids.

To help keep nutrients and phosphates down I use carbon, a small amount of rowaphos, seachem's purigen, and a product by microbe-lift called Special Blend.

second I just started keeping sps, and i see you live in eastern long island.. where? I live in rocky point and have a 125 gal. would love to see the tank some time. I will be attending lira meetings as of november. The first frags i started with are the pink birdsnest and a frag of the acropora formosa from joe fish;s tank.

Dustin, Do you have a pic of one added to a mag scrapper? I would love to see how you have it mounted.

the sps are great, but that HUGE branching hammer coral colony(correct?) in the bottom left of the tank and those clams are what gets my eye. good job man, keep up the good work. i would buy a frag pack from you before liveaquaria or marinedepotlive anyday

Thanks, that tank is gone though. Took it down to put up a bigger (and hopefully better) tank. Just getting ready to put corals in it in a week or so.

I ended up finding this through a search.... Unbelievable color and growth...
