Finally some pics (not dialup friendly)

I've been busy the last few months so I have not been able get around to taking and posting any pictures. I finally had some free time this evening so here are some recent shots.

Yes I am still running a DSB. ;)

I hate you Joe!! :p

I wish your name was JB WIS, so I could come and see your tank.

jackson6745 10/02/2005 05:51 PM

WOW Joe that growth is getting out of control! Everything looks great

thetedinator 10/02/2005 05:58 PM

Joe,

Awesome. Want to bring some of that with to LA next month? J/K.

Cya,

Ted

Bomber 10/02/2005 06:06 PM

Absolutely beautiful. :D

I want to know how in this world do you get those frags glued so neat?? and get them to stay when you do it?

Mine always look like some monkey spread the glue all over the place.

Creetin 10/02/2005 06:18 PM

Yes very nice!!! What is that a frag of in the first pic? If you can call that a frag. LOL

h20cooled 10/02/2005 06:19 PM

Wow, that is an amazing tank. Bomber, I have the same problem with glue, its hard enough to keep off of the coral and then trying to not glue my fingers together...

GunMoto 10/02/2005 06:27 PM

Re: Finally some pics (not dialup friendly)

That frag refuses to encrust and has been re-glued three times over the year I have had it. Last time was few days ago.

With the frag out of the tank, use a combo of super glue and epoxy. Just knead a little ball of epoxy and put a dab of CA on one side of the ball. Then stick the ball (CA side) to the frag. next put a dab of CA on the other side of the ball and stick the frag with the epoxy and ca glue into the rock. It will hold real well and make little mess.

I use that method for everything, most all the frags encrust soon, this is one of the only ones that really doesn't lay down a good base so it comes loose every one in a while.

here is is back in February, as you can see it has become thicker but the base is about the same.

http://www.cnidarianreef.com/images/...s/DSCN0065.jpg

Creetin I think this coral is probably A. loripes. I don't think anyone else has this guy yet.

Guys I just fragged the dickins out of the tank last week. I had a few freinds over and sent them out with two coolers and a IO bucket full of frags.

Yeah the tank is growing out of control.

Ereefic 10/02/2005 06:41 PM

We could use a care package here in Wisconsin Joe. ;) :D

Kip 10/02/2005 07:10 PM

darned sand

beautiful as usual

Creetin 10/02/2005 07:17 PM

Swet coral! I had the same problem with a oregon tort, I had to eventually lay it on its side to get it to get a good base.
Your piece looks like its a little too big to do that now.
Good luck i hope it takes for ya.

You are funny.

See how neat that little bit of glue is on your frag? If I did that I would have fish, fingers glued together, a rock slide and 20 more frags.

teritip 10/02/2005 07:55 PM

:eek1: wow.......

DaddyJax 10/02/2005 07:56 PM

VERY JEALOUS!!

AngGenova23 10/02/2005 07:56 PM

what kind of lighting are you using? mind giving specs or pics of equipment so maybe one day i can have a tank as great as yours lol. im running a ssb atm, kinda the same method oregon reef uses

almost looks like your using a purple lights instead of actinic.

jay24k 10/02/2005 07:56 PM

Very very nice. You really should do some frag packs as your tank is really nice. I do something similiar and it is always neat. I just stick a big blob of glue on the bottom of the frag and let it sit in the air for about 20 seconds. Then quickly put into place and give it a nice twist. Then I use a single finger and hold the frag into place for about 45 seconds. Sometimes the gel won't hold so I place more over the other gel and I've never had a non encrusting frag fall off.

More pics!

nbd13 10/02/2005 08:32 PM

Very nice Joe,

any more pics?

whats the name of the purpleish one in pic number 4

and the name of that one in pic 5 the one thats in the middle.

also any pics of that raceway frag system you have? how is that going for you? any regrets? or things you would change about it?

thanks.

Nick

sonofgaladriel 10/02/2005 08:54 PM

Its stunning SPS tanks like this that keep from going to a fish only tank!
I was getting a little depressed the last two weeks due to losing a few nice aquacultured colonies and some nice frags, and was considering turning my cube into a fish only to avoid the stress, but seeing this beauty has helped me decide to stick with it!
Absolutely stunning! The colors, placement, and growth is simply awe inspiring!
I am of course extremely jealous!

fishdoc11 10/02/2005 09:01 PM

As allways amazing tank and shots Joe:D

Chris

Jesus 10/02/2005 09:02 PM

peehair 10/02/2005 09:39 PM

hey Joe, why do you say "yes i am still running a DSB"???
is it better if you don't have a DSB for sps or whats the deal?
and if so then how do you do it??

jthnhale 10/02/2005 10:29 PM

looks awesome, but that's not enough pics :) ;)

Wiskey 10/02/2005 11:45 PM

Very nice, I only hope I can get my tank to look something like that in a few years.

I have never glued my fish to a frag before, but my cleaner shrimp glued his front 4 apendiges together because he tried to clean one. The worst part is he did this TWICE, you would think he would learn,..

I run 3 250-watt XM10K MH with 3 URI super actinic VHOs all on icecap ballasts.

The camera tend to make things look a little more purple (really only on things that are blue) than they are. But I am running VHO actincs. If you are used to seeing PC or T5 actinics, VHO tend to look a little more purple, I think VHO looks much better though, IMO.

That's all I took. Maybe I can get a few more tonight.

That a tort, Cali or Oregon not sure which. Looks more blue in real life.

The green with purple tipped table like colony? It came as a free frag a few years ago, not sure what it is, the closest I can come is A. longicyathus.

Here it is as a little frag (when I still had red bugs)

about a year later
http://www.cnidarianreef.com/images/...s/DSCN5595.jpg

finally the pic I posted 9 months afetr the one above.

No new ones. I wouldn't do a raceway if I did it again. The channels don't produce enough current for SPS, so I have powerheads in the channels of the raceway. Since I have the powerheads there really is no point to having the channels or the raceway for that matter. I think it would be good for lps, softies or zoanthids though.

JB NY 10/03/2005 07:29 AM

Guys thanks so much for all the kind words. The last few months have been crazy busy in real life so I had no time for the tank. literally weeks would go by without really looking at the tank. I had some recession on two pieces back in July that got me nervous that I had been neglecting it (which I had). Bumped up the current with another powerhead and they both seam to have snapped back.

Once again thanks all for the kind words.

Jovreefer 10/03/2005 07:34 AM

That green w/purple tip table was what stuck out most in your tank to me! simply stunning piece...and different... I think you did not frag that enough...theres a piece thats begging to be sent to MA.

The whole tank is amazing also and I love the sand ;)

Jamesurq 10/03/2005 08:23 AM

Very nice Joe.

Truely a masterpiece. Gives me something to strive for.

ctxmonitor 10/03/2005 08:48 AM

i Know you the master in distributing flow around your tank.. Gonna needs a few pointers from you.. do you have a shot of the top layer of the tank with all your powerhead, stream, returns?

cward 10/03/2005 08:53 AM

Very nice pictures Joe!!!

PaintGuru 10/03/2005 09:34 AM

Definitely a take I aspire to. I love the superglue/epoxy idea. When you say "CA", what is that an abbreviation for? Sorry I'm slow ;).

Delicious1234 10/03/2005 09:37 AM

Hey oe what do you have in your tank for circulation ?

SawCJack00 10/03/2005 10:15 AM

Spectacular, Joe!!!

nbd13 10/03/2005 10:31 AM

Wow thats pretty impressive growth you have there.

if you can take a full tank shot that would be great.

also what chiller are you runing? and where is that located in relation to the tank. i think most of your equipment is in the basement right?

thanks again Joe.

Nick

P.S. do you get most of your corals from online or from locals and trading? thanks

Ereefic 10/03/2005 10:32 AM

Joe, how high are your lights off the water? And also, I see you turn your MH's on for about an hour first thing in the morning, to simulate sunrise. Any particular reason you are doing this?

Markk96 10/03/2005 11:02 AM

Joe you have one of the best tanks I have ever seen. So I like to visit your website often and reading your logs and looking at your equipment list.

I don't have a shot of the top, it's actually not that impressive, most of my powerheads are pointed at a slight angle down so I don't get the top of the tank stirring up like crazy.

I'll see if I can take a picture tonight showing the powerheads and all. Right now I have a tunze stream (6100), two seios(820 & 620), a maxjet 1200, and 3/4" sea swirls powered by my return pump, probably 450GPH out of each sea swirl.

The lights are 8" off the water.

I like seeing the whole tank lit up when I'm getting ready to leave before work. It's also when I feed the fish in the morning. The lights come on, everyone wakes up for breakfast. :)

Cyanoacrylate, abbreviated as CA is the generic name for Superglue.

I'll see if I can get a tank shot tonight.

I am running an Aqua Logic 1/3HP Delta Star In-Line. It is plumbed into the sump located in the basement.

Once again thans for the kind words guys.

PUGroyale 10/03/2005 12:00 PM

huh... I'm just not feeling it  Start over and try and do better next time...

:D ...still my favorite RC tank ;)
